Are WIX filters overlooked here?

How do you guys feel about WIX filters? Am I the only one that feels WIX filters are overlooked here? More people seem to run Purolator or Fram here while disregarding WIX as an equivalent candidate. Is it because of availably? Efficiency? Cost? The efficiency seems to vary according to size too which I find a little odd. Maybe I have a lot to learn yet?

If people are wanting to avoid Purolator for obvious reasons and use a filter with metal end caps without paying for an extended OCI filter, WIX seems to be the way to go IMO. Stout media with a silicon ADBV. Ill admit I have a few in my stash, but I wish I didn't so I wouldn't feel so guilty buying another I want to try first.

Fram TG and Ultra being my main 2.. Lol.

Though I've used many P1's successfully including now and not had an issue, recently able to get Napa Gold(Wix) for 40% off, so my stash now is majority NG's. Think some take issue with their vague (whitewashed?) efficiency ratings/specs, but they are quality filters nonetheless. And, a real value at ~$3.75 for the spin on's, with silicone adbv's and majority thread end bypass.

And unlike some other brands, they don't advertise very much.

I've got a Wix on my Jeep right now with no complaints. I had never used one before. Found a small parts chain that carries Wix near my home. The Wix for my Jeep is a few pennies over $5 and the Wix for my wife's Xterra is just over $5.50. Not too bad especially since I pass by this store everyday and it's a quick in and out. I returned all my Classics and Pure One's to AA. I wanted to exchange them for Fram TG's but they didn't carry them so I got Ultras instead. A little overkill for my OCI interval. Unless things change in the future, it'll be Wix/Fram TG from now on.

I have seen a decent amount of WIX lovers too, but check out at least the first 4 pages of the filter forum. Just looking at the thread titles show Purolator and Fram are in the lead.

Very valid point. The normal DIY'er would never hear of them. Heck they are even on the very top shelf at Oreilly's. Any short guys such as myself would never consider looking up to see them unless they read about them on the web. Lol.

I think its availability. I use Fram TG because its easy to grab a filter and oil at same time at WM. P1 i took apart did have metal end caps and looked solid for the interval I run.

WIX aren't as widely distributed in the retail channels as Purolator and Fram. When you see NAPA filters, you're also seeing WIX who makes them.

WIX are robustly constructed, with lots of metal parts and coil bypass springs. The filter media area tends to be a little smaller than some of its competitors, but they seem to test out pretty well on filtration.

I have seen WIX made both in the USA and in Mexico. They are not too expensive.

They are a good middle-of-the-road filter line that does everything pretty well but nothing exceptionally well.

One guy's opinion

I use Wix filters on two vehicles that I still run conventional oil in and do short OCIs.

Honestly, I think the reason Fram and Purolator get talked about so much is because they both have controversy lingering around them. This leads to the strange rationale that a fault of one brand justifies a fault of another. I've seen that type of argument erupt multiple times. These debates keep bringing those 2 brands to the forefront of many discussions. But like you said, there are other options out there.

I used Wix for 2 or 3 changes. I don't know if I paid attention back then to my oil pressure at startup, but I assume it did fine. I started watching that after a problem I had with Mobil.

I've been using Purolator because they had a good reputation and they seal so well. The gauge shows oil pressure at or slightly before the engine has started. Now that I've lost confidence in Purolator for other reasons, I might switch to Wix again or try Fram Ultra.

NAPA/WIX here for life

Silly spell check on my phone changed WIX. Sorry about that.

Amsoil filters have been made by a variety of suppliers over the years. Amsoil moved a chunk of part numbers to WIX some years back and had some issues mainly with ADBV ingestion and some other workmanship issues. Now most are made by Champ. The suppliers have also been Clarcor based as well as Donaldson.

Wix and Champ/ACDelco non-ecore.

I might avoid the wix in the very small form factor filters as the base end bypass (VERY Important)takes up a lot of can space. I like the ACDELCO PF2057 best for the small Honda engines, but I have a hard time finding them.

Wix are sold at REAL autoparts stores so that is why you may not see them as much as the commodity items Fram and Pure-O-Leaker.

Just about every filter I've bought in the last year has been Wix made, almost all Napa Silvers and Golds, so my current stash is about 80% Wix. At the price and quality level you can't beat 'em IMO.

Plenty of good alternatives but Wix has escaped the drama that has beset Fram and Puro though, at least from what I've seen.

I did a survey on here, using results from the 2012 OCI thread. Wix was well represented in use, especially when you note the heavy use of the Wix made Napa filters.

2012 Filter Survey thread

All my filters are Wix, including oil, air, cabin, transmission, and fuel. This is mainly because of the price and convenience of buying from filter1.com. No need to run around the stores to get what I need.
