Not a good judge of a deal on computers here - but I will throw my support behind Lenovo. If I compared the first year of ownership between my Lenovo T510 and my Dell Inspiron...... where to start.

my understanding is that there is a big difference between the Thinkpads (former IBM design) w/metal case bands, shock mounted drives, etc. and the Lenovo consumer models. My N-3000 w/ core 2 duo from summer of 2008 was a consumer model and as of 6 months ago had no screen, no working battery and HD failure and boot problems. very gentle treatment, rarely moved from desk by the way. The Thinkpad series had great reps. ALSO, I have seen nice laptops for $299 and even a quad core AMD 4gig 500 gig discrete video W7X64 OS FOR $399 (gATEWAY)so there is a lot of stuff out there and not just the 3 per store midnight specials.

They're good deals for brand new Lenovos, but I've seen better deals locally and online for other brands with similar hardware. Do you need a 500 gig hard drive???

That's a deal!

Best buy has some great deals on Laptops.

I've heard mixed reviews on the Ideapads but not much with the Thinkpad. I know my Thinkpad chassis is still metal and the hard drive is mounted on some kind of shock-proof system.

Decent deals.

Just bought my wife a Dell for Christmas to replace her tired old Vostro from 2007. After the sale price plus some special coupon offers I had, it brought the price for a new Inspiron 15R down to $300.

Just remember, don't worry about memory when ordering, but do upgrade/max it out later. If you can find a deal like Lenovo had a few weeks ago where they were offering a free upgrade to 6GB from 4 then that's fine but if you can only find a decent price on 4GB models have no fear as memory is dirt cheap on Newegg compared to upgrading it from the manufacturer.

I ordered the Dell with 4GB and then ordered an 8GB dual channel kit from G.skill for $45. Before I even turned it on I put in the new memory.

Then I did a drive wipe and reinstall of Win 7 to remove all the [censored] that was preinstalled and installed all of the programs she uses along the utilities I regularly use. I did it ahead of time and then boxed it back up, wrapped it and put it under the tree so that I don't have to fool with it on Christmas morning.

ordered a ThinkPad Edge for wifey.
Only add-ons done were i5 processor (instead of i3), Office home/student package, and 720p camera.

Pretty good deal, I think.

They have extended the sale today...now I am wondering if I should get a T420 or an X series...

I can't understand where in the line up the X series stands...is it above or below the T series ??

How many GB RAM? IIRC they max at either 8 or 16GB.

Here's the 8GB RAM kit I put in the Dell for my wife.

$47. Makes a heck of a difference over the 4GB they are shipping with.

According to Newegg will also work in the Edge you ordered.

Should be about a 5 minute job to replace.

Yep I will add additional RAM.

Idk the max..will have to see.
comes with 4 GB only...

However, I will only add it if I see it's needed. Wifey's laptop use is very basic and not demanding. she hardly does anything other than upload pics, basic browsing and word processing etc.

I am the one who does all the RAM demanding stuff. I of course max out whatever PCs I use.

Now I am jealous...perhaps i should get my dream T420 too?
right now my ancient ThinkPad R60 is chugging along on Ubuntu...but...upgrade bug has bitten me, too...

IDK perhaps i should wait and see if there are Xmas deals..

For $47 shipped, dump in 8GB regardless. You'll be future proofing it to an extent and you're wife will see a performance improvement. Heck you popped for the i5 which has the fancy "turbo boost" functions. May as well take full advantage of Sandy Bridge and bump the RAM to at least 8GB. 4GB is getting to be the new minimum with Win 7. Yes it will run just fine 4GB or even 3 but its much snappier with 8.

Also don't forget, the 4GB they are sending you is likely in the form of a single 4GB stick so you don't have the RAM running dual channel mode. In single channel mode your memory bus width is only 64bits vs 128bits in dual channel. The maximum theoretical bandwidth with DDR3-1333 goes form 10.6GB/s in single channel mode to 21.3GB/s in dual channel mode.

If they shipped the computer with 2x2GB operating in dual channel mode, I might say pass on the upgrade to an 8GB dual channel kit if she doesn't do any memory intensive tasks. However, IIRC the spec sheet for the Edge you bought your wife (was looking at one for my wife too) states that its a single 4GB stick.

hmmm....I didn't think about the dual channel thing...I guess an extra 4 GB would make more sense with dual channel...
Thanks

dang - wifey's laptop is gonna be the new main laptop in the house !

No problem. The lack of dual channel configuration in a majority of the cheap laptop deals is a significant hindrance in performance. What otherwise would be a fairly snappy machine for everyday tasks (even the i3's aren't bad) gets hamstrung by the lack of a dual channel RAM configuration as shipped from the factory.
