Are Syns cleaner than Dino, longterm?

We've had very scant evidence on here of any oil alone doing anything to clean up an engine. Closest I've seen was JAG with some Mobil 1 0W40. I couldn't even really see it but he was there so I give him the benefit of the doubt.


Now, I'd LOVE to see someone run tests with the new Mobil 1 High Mileage. It makes bold claims to clean up deposits. I'm sure it's just marketing but it'd be nice to see.

I agree that at best any oil will just flush stuff out....eventually over many oil changes, some oils will slowly dissolve caked on junk.

Soak a coked turbo pipe in any new motor oil of your choice. I highly doubt the coke will just dissolve out. It's best to not have the plaque build-up in the first place.

I think it will do more than just flush stuff out, as far as soft sludge is concerned. I've seen many sludged up motorcycle crankcases clean right up with a routine change of oil - often the first in a long time I'm sure. That is, I believe, exactly what detergents are designed to do.

I agree that for hard deposits, oil will not likely have any effect.

No, that's not what detergents are designed to do. Detergents are meant to hold in suspension deposits as they form. They aren't expected to be tasked with cleaning out lots of residual gunk from prior oil changes.

Glenn, I don't know how to compare to a motorcycle crankcase, but I know as far back as 2005 (under a previous user name), when I first got my sludger, I've been looking on here for evidence of oil cleaning up sludge. I've yet to see any good proof three years later. That doesn't mean it's not out there, but i've seen folks experiment with the uber oils, mega dosing zddp and other additives, running their favorite HDEOs etc...Nothing has shown to consistently clean. Arx is the closest most folks have found on here to something that cleans things right up. That, even, has been a slow process on my car. But mainly b/c of my efforts to find something else that worked.
