I've checked the cooling fins and all the other stuff on my laptop and they're clean. If i do get a cooler,is there one i should get and one to avoid?

yep. all of them.. im a systems admin with 7 years experience.. they dont do much good.. the cooling system on a laptop was designed to cool the laptop properly by itself under maximum load conditions. at best you'd just be putting unnessicary strain on the usb controller by drawing power through the usb ports if its one of those usb powerd ones, at worst you may obstruct some ventalation ports and hav the fans "fighting" eachother reducing cooling.. my advice. buy a can of canned air. spray it on the heatsink fins.. there will be dust. do this as Preventative maintanance, and operate the laptop on a solid surface with adequate support.. I.e. no beds, blankets or other surfaces where it could obstruct the vents.

I use a Targus laptop cooler. It generally lets my hard drive and processor run about 10-15 degrees cooler than without. More importantly for me, it keeps the keyboard surface of the computer much cooler. Prior to using it, my wrists would end up sweating. Not a problem with.

The cooler I am using is 6 year old and still works fine. It was about $15 when I got it.

In my experience, well worth it. My laptop is an older Pentium 4 based unit. Even with clean heat-sinks and good fans, it runs about 130-135 degrees under normal operationg. With the cooler it's about 120 degrees. Hard drive runs at about 100 with no cooler, 90 or less with cooler.

The GF and I have a Logitech cooler and it works great. It has a slow low draw fan that is super quiet. The laptop's internal fan rarely kicks on. The only time I have heard it run is during the lengthy weekly virus scan. Plus it has the correct angle for typing and now my palms dont hit the touch pad while typing. It weighs less than a pound and the laptop is very secure on it. It is the Model N100. It has no negatives and tons of positives.

This Gateway gets too warm for using in my lap sometimes. Its a concern to me I don't want to overheat something. Its plugged in 99 % of the time.

They are not the same.

Sizes are different.
Designs are different.
Fan size and noise is different.

x2

Saying they're all the same would be like saying all 80mm fans are the same.
