I was looking at analysis of Dexos 1 Gen 2 oils and suddenly was struck by the fact I couldn't tell the difference.

Supertech Synthetic 5W30 (Warren), Mobil 1 Advanced 5W30 and Mobil 1 AFE 0w30 all looked pretty much the same. Moly, Boron, Calcium and Magnesium all pretty much the same add pack.

Not all are alike. For example, some Valvolines use titanium as AW/FM. Zepro Eco Medalist uses a lot of moly in their dexos1 Gen2 0w20, another example.
Also, base oils and anti-oxidant packages across even just the Mobil1 family are different (i.e., M1 EP & AP have more PAO than other M1's). All are dexos1 Gen2 though.
Ravenol DXG has much better base oils (PAO+ester) & uses tungsten with moly and OFMs, with a NOACK of only 6% & a pour point of -70F, all superior.

dexos1 Gen2 is a minimum set of specs and performance tests results can & do vary. It doesn't specify formulation. You will find that calcium and sodium are greatly reduced across the board for LSPI avoidance.

The detergent packages should be similar. The friction modifier/ antiwear can be different. The focus is the ash content can not exceed standard.

PimTac - where did you find the add pack info for the Valvoline Advanced? Their website doesn't break it down from what I can see. I'm going to run this oil next OCI.

There was another long thread about this as well but this is the more recent one.

Valvoline is also running a rebate right now as well.

Are all d1g2 oils the same?
As oil-film-movies has said, it must meet certain spec and pass certain tests ...
I assume it would be like asking if all 5Wx30 oils are the same! no? I'm sure that question has resulted in a lot of heated debates ...

To the op i would say, close enough. Add packs ate now very similar across the board with Magnesium on the rise, Calcium reduced, Sodium gone, Moly and Tiranium now present in oils which didn't use them before, and Boron in relatively high numbers too.
