Are 5w20 & 0w20 Interchangeable?

Speaking in general terms, 0w20 oils will outperform 5w20 oils. Better base stocks, and often times they meet more specifications. They will have better oil flow at start up as well. No reason to use 5w20 if 0w20 is allowed.
This is the way I’ve always thought about the subject, want sure if it was true, but I’ve heard it long enough to believe it is.

Hey javacontour, I got the same question a couple of weeks ago, when I did the same thing !!
So, in the appropriate twisted sort of way, I don't feel nearly as bad now.

And, besides that, honestly what we are supposed to do, when we come across a thread that seems exactly like the topic we are interested in?
(I maybe should be asking ruhroh ??)

Hey guys, let us know. Thanks !!

All I did was, I thought, just ask a question about how specific old posts get found and not other older or more recent ones. I tend to use google's operator search within this domain but some links there are broken since the forum changed. I thought about this and my previous reply to you, and nope, not going to take your sarcastic bait.

Welcome to the forums, enjoy your stay.

And no, you don't need to ask me for anything.

If you're asking in good faith: my personal view is you should probably start a new thread since it'll probably get more replies and information can change through the years. A Purolator/Fram thread from 2012 is going to give different viewpoints than the same topic now.

I use 0W20.

Here in the UK, the winter rating is worthless to me because it simply never gets cold enough to be significant.

On the other hand, the lower viscosity at 40°C (and all points below 100°C) is worth a lot to me. Typically my longest drive is about 50 miles. For a goodly part of that journey, the oil will be less than 100°C & so the oil's viscosity will be thinner than more or less any oil on the market (0W16s haven't washed up here yet).

Despite the car coming up to 5 years old, I can still tootle along at 72 mpg in God's units (about 60 US?) with standard unleaded.

Well here’s the thing, you’re going to get questioned when you start a new thread asking about something that’s already been talked about. And then you’re going to be questioned when doing a search and commenting on an old thread.

Here’s my advice...read through all the old threads and then if you have additional questions...scream them into a pillow in the basement in shame. Lol. No, honestly I love old threads that are brought back up for further discussion. And I love new threads too that lead to further discussion. And sometimes those old threads, the facts have changed a bit, new arguments/discussions can be made. It’s the internet, who cares? If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

Thank you. This is what I needed to know. I sure didn't want to ruffle any feathers, that's for sure.
Kind of reminds me of the old saying, "I'll be glad to follow the rules. I just need to know what they are."

I will have to say, I am finding BITOG to be an EXCELLENT source of great information, as well as reasonable opinions.
A few years ago I seemed to find way too many rather baseless opinions and arguments, and not so much substantial material.

"Keep up the quality threads everyone !!"
(in my case, I need to do a lot more reading and research before jumping up and blabbing,,,)

-perfect case in point for me, was when I finally clicked on the "home" button on the BITOG home page, and discovered the most excellent dissertation I have ever read on the topic of "base oils." If I would have read that a few weeks earlier, I could have asked fewer dumb questions,,,

Oh, another though: Yes it is "only the internet", but in this amazing time in history we have at our finger tips the most powerful source of information ever know to the human race. Wouldn't it be fantastic if (and hopefully when) more people would work with the good stuff, and leave the useless stuff alone.

Cheers !!

I couldn't agree more.

Sure they are but I always use only what is recommended by the manufacturer. I too love old threads I don’t see a problem with them. On my other forums they bring them up all the time. The only time it’s bad is when it’s a troll that brings it up.

What about vehicles that have engines like the Hemi 5.7L that everyone says requires 5W20?
I've never tried anything else in mine...
My son got a 2020 Hemi Ram @ year end sale … got my 2020 Rubicon this summer … found it odd that one is 5w20 and one is 0w20. Had given him 6 gallons of 0w20 Pennzoil Gold… said just run that …
