OK, I have a new 2011 Toyota Tundra 4WD. It has fittings on the drive shaft on the rear and front shaft. It requires a Lithium-based complex. Which grease from among the following choices:

1) Amsoil GRG - Series 2000 Racing Grease
2) Amsoil GLC - Synthetic Multi-purpose Grease
3) Amsoil GWR - Synthetic Water Resistant Grease
4) Mobil 1 synthetic Grease

The Amsoil choices above are what Amsoil's web site recommends for the 2010 model year. I added Mobil 1 because I have used it on other applications and it is readily available.

If you limit the choices to the above four, which would you choose and why?

#2, Amsoil GLC - Has the moly needed for your application. You do not need a water resistant grease, and you do not have a high temp application that would call for the racing grease.

The GLC is one of the better greases out there (from any brand) for your application.

You did not ask, but heck this is BITOG. If it were "ME", I would find someplace that sold Pennzoil TTM302 grease for that application.

Johnny -

I don't think GLC has any Moly. I believe you are thinking of GHD, which I used to use, but this has been discontinued.

Now, the only Moly fortified grease Amsoil makes is not Lithium based, and is not one of the greases recommended by Amsoil for my application. I have never used any of the three Amsoil greases above, which is partly why I was asking which from among the four above.

What's so special about the Pennzoil TTM302 grease? Who would sell it?

The Pennzoil TTM302 is a great Lithium Complex grease with moly, but forget about it as it would probably be to hard to find.

Did not know about the GHD grease being discontinued. In that case I would still stick with #2 for the same reasons I listed above. You don't have to worry about a lot of water and you do not need a hi-temp grease.

Maybe old Pablo will step in here.

I will say I am not a big fan of the regular Mobil 1 grease, but Mobil makes a grease called SHC which is a very good grease. Although I don't know how hard that would be to find either.

I'm fairly certain GLC does have moly in it. It is an "extreme pressure" grease anyway...

Of the four above I would use the GRG hands down.

But even better is not listed:

Amsoil HD Truck Grease GPTR2

Pablo -

I am very glad you found this thread - I need help understanding which is the best product in the Amsoil line.

1) Why isn't GPTR2 listed as an alternative in the Amsoil product lookup for my application?

2) I agree with Johnny's comments in that the drive shaft fittings aren't a high-speed, high-heat application, although they will be exposed to water via splashing through puddles on the road (No immersion, though, I'm not a boater).

3) Is GPTR2 really better than GRG? I thought GRG was Amsoil's top of the line...

1) Plain and simple because sometimes (and especially with grease) the recommendations are limited by the book "translation" (not much human thought) and not updated.

2) Not high speed, not under water. GPTR2 is perfect.

3) GPTR2 is better for THIS application. GRG is better for wheel bearings, for example.

Are you lubing u-joints? Any of the greases listed or in the store that are NGLI2 are good enough.

Rear drive shaft slip joints demand at least 3% moly, or equivalent lube like graphite, teflon....or the splines will bind.

And, since I've never seen an issue with moly in u-joints, pick a moly lithium grease and use it everywhere.

Does anyone drive in the rain? Its not under water but can be a pressure washer on the highway.

My recommendation is to exercise the grease gun at every oil change, or at least once year, and pump the slip and u-joints full of fresh grease.

Fresh grease regularly is more important than what fancy grease you use.

True enough - but I would venture to say there many cars that never even swap the factory grease....for the life of the car!

I'm still confused as to why we're limited to these 4 choices? There are more readily available greases that could fit the bill besides these.

I'm a fan of Mobil and Amsoil products, which is why I limited the choices. I am open to considering others, if you've got some strong recommendations.

Meanwhile, I heard back from Amsoil regarding the Amsoil greases...Attached is the response:

"The GPTR2 is recommended for greasing slow moving locations, like suspensions, but not for fast situations like wheel bearings. It can be used for the applications mentioned. We do not list it as has not been tested against the automotive specifications “GC” or “LB”. If not subjected to excess water or used for Racing, the GLC is the best choice. "

Darn, I should have been an Amsoil salesman.

I'm also not a big fan, and do not use the regular Mobil 1 grease. It can separate in the grease gun, regardless if you have pressure on it or not. Documented many times.

The SHC is a very high quality grease - we use it as well as XHP (regular & Special [contains moly]) on 'wet' machinery with excellent results. Both are available from McMaster-Carr and for the price, XHP is an astounding value.
