Apple IOS 26

Thankful!

Ahhh, so they've gone Auto OEM on it and named it after the model year that we aren't yet into, lol.

Autodesk did this with our product when we were acquired. (Autodesk bought the Canadian company discreet logic in about 2000)

When they forced this on us we went from V14 to "v whatever the year was" at that time.

They had the dumbest reasoning for doing it - " who would buy a version 14 product? "

Uhhh the same guys that bought V13?

This ended up being a total cheat because major version upgrades at one point meant something, but with subscription you had to keep giving the impression you were getting something of your money every year so our customer ended up getting insignificant changes, but had to keep paying.

Hated when they did this because what it meant was they were releasing a 'major' update annually, and at a pre-determined time, come hell or high water, whether it was really ready or not. Pro/E didn't use the same versioning scheme but they did move to annual releases and it got bad.... They relented at one point and said, "we listened to you.... we're stopping annual releases now..." and said they'd release updates when the software was ready.

So is there anything groundbreaking with 26 that makes it a compelling update?

I think from the very limited amount, I know that the only feature that sounds appealing to me is the spam and phone call filtering if I understand it correctly. But I I have not updated yet.

As far as this liquid glass? Is it anything so appealing and why Apple is marketing it like crazy?

I would love to see an AI that could figure out what I am saying in text to speech🤣

I can take or leave the "liquid glass" theme, but the spam filtering for phone is a fantastic improvement and it's disappointing that it took Apple so long to implement this, as I understand it has been available on Android for years.

This was a long time ago now, but back then it was easy for me to block entire area codes on my android phone. I can do it with Apple, but it’s a convoluted pain in the neck backwards way.

Glad to hear it, for me that makes the upgrade worthwhile alone. Being able at the time to eliminate entire area codes on my old android phone this solved a lot of problems with calls from Central and Western USA that I never had any reason to be getting calls from at the time.
This was a long time ago, though, but you kind of knew the exchanges is where spam calls would always come from at that time. Of course, now it’s more sophisticated and you get phone calls from your own area codes and everywhere else around you.

Before we moved, and with the Apple devices at the time I blocked any calls that were not in my contact list but that’s impossible now in a new location with new doctors, health network and other issues that have sprung up since we moved

Well, after not hearing about any major glitches, I finally just upgraded to iOS 26.1 from 18? I think it was.
I did it a few hours ago, and I am happy to say I like all the little things about it. I haven’t gone deep into anything, but I just turned on the call screening which is kind of neat. I like the refreshed buttons and look of Safari and am I crazy or is the keyboard just a little bit more tweaked for lack of better words?
All the little things kind of neat including the glass look. I can get bored with the same old electronics all the time even though my phone is only seven months old. I appreciate the new touches of 26.

Definitely worth it to me. Updated modern and clean is my impression.

I'm apparently late to the draw on this, my wife already had it installed when I got home!

I'm about to install it on my phone, so I'll give a bit of an update later when I've had a chance to mess around it it, but it's pretty wild how Apple skipped so far ahead with the versioning.

Here's an article on the changes:
https://9to5mac.com/2025/09/15/ios-26-now-available/

But cliff notes of two major changes:
- Totally different icons and "glassing" as well as "active" icons
- Enhanced spam filtration for voice and text

I’ve noticed my camera doesn’t look like a camera anymore. Plus way you call contacts has changed. I have 2nd Gen SE. getting either 3rd Gen SE or 17 iPhone very quickly

Then what to do with current iPhone SE 2nd gen

This update on my iPhone 14 Pro made realize why bother upgrading to a iPhone 17pro. It’s wonderful to me.

My battery health pre and post iOS 26 upgrade was only reason I wanted to charge phones .

I held off on the initial release of 26. Last night it automatically pushed 26.2 to my phone.

Is there an option to make it look iOS 18-ish? Rephrased, to make it not look 26-ish.

Two things to help.
1. Go to Settings -> Display and Brightness -> Liquid Glass. Set it to “Tinted”.
2. Lock your phone. Wake up the screen by tapping it once. Click and hold anywhere on it in some free space. You should see a “Customize” button pop up at the bottom, click it. Tap the clock. Look on the bottom and you should see two options “Glass” or “Solid”. Click “Solid”. Click “Done” in the upper right.

Those two things are the best ways to minimize of the largely disliked “Liquid Glass” appearance effects.

If you are interested in a 3rd gen SE, get one ASAP. They stopped making them last year, but you can still find some around. It has some upgrades from the 2nd gen. I love the SE, with its home button. It also is a bit smaller than most other I phones so easier to put in pocket, etc.

Exactly why i have had 2 SE's. Perfect size for me and my working environment clothes etc. Ya the big phones are nice ,but just to big to carry around all day at work in and out of machines and trucks.

My wife likes the SE also and isn’t into tech at all, hers it’s still the gen 2. I offer to buy her a new phone every 6 months or so, any one she wants but she would rather keep the old SE.

She texted me today, said her phone did a update and is now “all stupid and weird” so assume it updated to iOS 26 🤣

My phone wasn’t ringing ( gen 3 SE) after the software update. All calls going direct to VM. Apparently the “focus” setting was turned on automatically. I googled the issue and shut off the focus thing. PIA afaic, I don’t need any of this propeller hat wearing coder crap. Just make the battery last and make the internet speedy. Oh, and also make and receive calls. Missed several calls from the doctors office. Finally the lady left a message nd told me that the phone was going directly to VM.

The iPhone 16 isn’t very big at all. I like small phones too and being able to fit them in my pocket and my 16 is the perfect size
