API SM?

I put havoline 20w50 in my buell xb9. Runs much quieter than with mobil 1 v-twin 20w50, but i'm worried about the API rating. I'm looking for a conventional oil that I can change often, but won't break the bank and won't cause premature wear.

Anyone use a HDEO 15w40 when the specs call for a 20w50? I've read the HDEO oils are tough, but they don't seem to make a 20w50.

There's a nice UOA out here for Havoline 20W-50 in an EVO and it did very well.

I read that post and posted a message. Fuel tanker hasn't posted in awhile, but I did pm him about the oil.

Wouldn't worry about the api rating. and would stay with the 20w50 if that's what buell wants. The high TBN of hdeo oil isn't doing you any good for the short oil change interval. The higher zinc levels are a non issue also, IMO.

I have not seen any used oil analysis or VOAs on the new Deposit Shield Havoline 20W50. The UOA referenced is the old Havoline. Unless you are operating in a cool environment I would (and do) stick with the HDs recommendation of a 20W50. What is the per month cost difference of using something that meets or exceeds HDs oils? The price of a cold one at Mickey's Bar and Grill once a week or a coke from a vending machine?

I don't know the price difference, but like I said, the expensive mobil 1 v-twin turns my motor into a noise maker. The bike would make an obnoxious ticking sound at idle until it warmed up, not so with the havoline. I might try another 20w50 synthetic, but if it makes a racket, then I will go back to the conventional stuff.
