API SL Question

Hello bitog members,
Today my vehicle in question is a 1992 Suzuki Sierra/Samurai with 1.3L petrol engine.
The manual says 10w40 or 20w50 in summer. And has to be minimum API SL.

It is currently running Mobil Semi-Syn 10W-40.
Caltex (Chevron) Delo400 MG 15w40 is a diesel oil that meets API CI4 Plus/SL. I have plenty of DELO400. Would this oil be suitable?

Also, it burns very little oil currently. I mainly don't want to use oil such as Mobil 10W-40 which is very expensive (>$150/20L) and overkill. Delo400 is available for $98/20L.

Hi Mate,

I would have no problem using Delo 400 15w40 in your Suzuki, it's a 40 grade oil that meets API SL. In Queensland, it never gets cold enough to worry about the difference between 10W and 15W, this is all well below zero stuff.

Another option is to keep an eye on the sales at Repco, Supercheap Auto and AutoBarn. They often have 10W40 semi-synthetic on sale, which should look after you fine. It's all API SN now, but that's not a worry, it's the newest API spec. Also you will probably find the 10W40 semi-synthetics to be a little thinner than the 15W40 HDEO's, and so that little 1.3 L engine may spin a little faster on the thinner 10W40.

The dual rated Delo 400 15W40 would do for you ....... and it may even help in oil consumption issue over MS 10W40.

Thanks for your advice. I have over 20L of Delo 400, so thats what I'll use. I run Delo400 in my other cars which have diesel engines.

Do they backspec like Ford did with 5w-20 a few years ago?

SL did not exist in 1992. The current spec at the time was SG

But the Delo should be fine
