If you've got a CARFAX account, could you please run the vin 1G1JC1240Y7288518 ? I went and looked at the car personally and it checked out, now I just want to make sure.

Google search grabbed this:

VIN 1G1JC1240Y7288518
Year/Make/Model: 2000 CHEVROLET CAVALIER
Body Style: COUPE
Engine Type: 2.2L L4 MPI OHV 8V
Manufactured In: UNITED STATES
Search Results: 9 records found in our database

Eagerly awaiting to learn what's in those 9 records.

When I bought a 7-year-old motorhome last month Autocheck said there were 10 records. I emailed them the following:
Quote:

Your site says this title has 10 records. Does that mean listings of sales dates and warranty work, etc, or are there potentially 10 bad things going on? CARFAX only says 2 records. Also this is a Class C motorhome on a Van chassis, but your site says you don't report on motorhomes. Not sure if I should get a report.

Their response:

These are just the initial title and subsequent registrations.

No point in getting the report unless I want to see where it was bought and if it was more than one owner.

Just for fun I ran a couple of "control" samples... I ran two cars that have been in our family since they were bought new. One has 12 records, the other has 18 records. Neither car has any salacious history. So, the number of records means nothing. You have to get the detail.

Those are probably state inspections from the DMV database. Do they happen to be 11-12 and 17-18 years old ..or did they get warranty work to account for the difference between state inspections and their age??

Also.......

Not all states open their records to for-profit sites such as Car-Fax.

Forget the number of states where these firms can not access info but it was a large enough number to cast doubts upon the validity of data regarding vehivles that have spent time in one of those non-reporting states.

My Corolla was always serviced by the dealer so it has a crapload of entries on Carfax, which show a clean vehicle history. However, my mom had the smart idea to run the thing with the dipstick completely dry for who knows how long, and now it knocks terribly. Even though it's only had 1 owner, it's still not a good idea for anyone to buy that particular car. In fact, that's why I'm looking for one.

About the Cavalier, I went to go look at it last night, and aside from a few dings on the exterior, it looks to be in great condition. The engine/transmission are smooth and I don't hear any funny noises, it feels tight and well put together (no rattles in the dash, etc), there's no rust, and it's clean. I don't think I necessarily need a Carfax for this car, and it'll probably be mine come this weekend.

Even if the DMV's aren't accessible ..I'll bet that the insurance companies operate collective databases to prevent fraud. They surely wouldn't want a car nearly totaled or totaled twice with the mere swapping of titles ....or so I would reason

these for profit carfax type companies probably put as much entries as possible or tied with dealerships so they can sell more of these things.

You're almost right on the money. The cars are 9 and 17 years old, respectively. The reports are probably from registrations... no state inspections ever for these cars.

Cutehumor, you make a good point. You would hope Carfax could filter out the nonessential information, except that they want to entice the potential customer with the large number of reports and lure the client into satisfying their curiosity.

Just be aware..I got my 2000 Sentra into a pretty serious t-bone accident and it never showed up on Carfax.

Also...my boss just bought his son a late model Cobalt, and when I gave the car a once-over, it became clear to me that a lot of people don't know what to look for when they're 'kicking tires'. It was very obvious to me that the front bumper cover had been removed and re-installed, as a small section of the area around the right headlight was popped out and laying on the front surface of the light, instead of snapping in below it. The paint texture on the hood, bumper and right front fender was also 'off'....something else he didn't notice when he bought it. There was also some paint overspray on the black plastic inside the right front fender well. And you guessed it...this car didn't show up on Carfax as having anything awry. It was clear to me that it had been wrecked, fixed, traded in and auctioned off. Unfortunately, I'm the only one that noticed, after it was too late.
