Just curious, I've done some research on this oil here but was wondering if anyone is using shell right now and their opinions of the oil. Thanks

I got a deal on 6 qts. of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 at Advance Auto Parts ($15 rebate). Plan to put it in my 2000 Taurus next week, along with an Amsoil filter, and leave it in for 6,000 miles. My feeling is that domestic brews are pretty good, European brews very good.

I'm assuming Buick92 is referring to the Shell Formula line of Grp II dino's.

See this Link to the Formula Shell Multigrades .

Normally the Formula Shell brand, is available on sale, for 99 cents in my area.

IMHO, Pennzoil, the flagship brand of Shell, gets higher quality base oils & a more robust add pack.

I'm using Shell Rotella 5W40 "syn" in a 120,000 mile Saturn 1.9.
Seems like good stuff.

The preceding round of "GC" improved oil consumption from 1qt/1000mi to .7qt/4000 mi
(poor man's ARX?)

Rotella has now run 3000 mi with approx half pint consumption.

I have a 1999 Hyundai Tiburon FX. I am using the Shell Dino SL.. not SM. Stand by for a UOA in the middle of August. If i'm satisfied like it did on the Supertech.. i'm staying with shell... if not I"m switching to Amsoil Synthetic.

I can find the Shell for $0.99 to $1.19/qt as well, I guess the question becomes is the Pennzoil worth the extra 50-90 cents more per quart than I can normally find Pennzoil for? It might depend on how often you change your oil, if you are a 3-4K OCI guy I doubt that extra cash spent on the pennzoil really matters. Thoughts?

I have 8 cases of Shell Formula in straight and multi-viscosity grades. Pep Boys was running sales for $.59 a quart so I stocked up over a period of a year. I don't keep the oil in for more than 3,000 miles so it works for me. If I did'nt have the stash of Shell in the basement I'd be buying Trop-Artic at Dollar General. Wall-Mart prices in our area for Dino keep going up, Mobil-1 seems to stay the same.

Thanks for the responses, I was in fact refering to the shell formula for gasoline engines, the VOA on it looked pretty weak, but the price is always cheap. I was considering it for some older cars we have.

Our business uses Rotella for all the diesel trucks and farm machinery where 15w40 or 5W-40 is appropriate.

I believe Johnny has said that Shell is GpII with a standard Lubrizol add pak while Pennzoil is Group II+ with an add pak developed by Shell Chemical, hence the price differential. I haven't ever tried the Shell PCMO's.

I have just started using Formula Shell 5w-20 in a 3.0L 24-V engine and was concerned how this oil was doing in this engine. So at 2400 miles i sent a sample off for an oil report as i have never seen a report on this oil. The report that i got back shows that the wear reading were low and can go to 4000 miles.

Stand by for a UOA in the middle of August. If i'm satisfied like it did on the Supertech.. i'm staying with shell... if not I"m switching to Amsoil Synthetic. I read on here by one of our better members that Shell 10/30 in the white bottles has a weak Add. pkg. That is not a bad thing it just means it will sheer to a 20wt quickly,Which it did. When you get to 3000 miles perhaps a boost of Valovline Oil Treatment may help get you to 5000 safely. But if Supertech worked so well in your Hyundai why change.Jumping to Amsoil is a step up like M1 or RL.Perhaps a ARX treatment then Amsoil for the Synthetic oil. Please post the Shell I still have about 8 qts I bought at .49.

Hi,
I have posted four UOAs on Shell's Helix Ultra 15w-50 (synthetic) here from my Porsche

I use the same excellent oil in a number of engines. I have used it for over a decade - great stuff!

Regards
Doug
