My differential has developed a front seal leak and I need to know if anyone has had success with reconditioning a diff seal. Please help!

1996 Ford Ranger 4wd, V6 4.0l. 104k miles. Never had any leaks before. I changed out the diff oil at 100k miles, used 75w-90 synthetic with adder of 4ozs of friction modifiers for the limited slip, filled till grease ranout of plug.

Differential

Auto-Rx® ratio is 2 ounces per quart of oil. Drive for 1,000 miles and drain. Refill according to vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. This unit uses heavy gear oil.

For "Leak" problem use non synthetic gear oil when you refill no Auto-Rx and drive up to 3000 miles.
Leak should stop if seal not cut or torn.

Thanks, Frank. Can I leave the synthetic that is in now in the unit for the Auto-Rx treat?

No problem when going into cleaning mode with synthetic oil.Rinse Mode go to "Dino"and to stop leak stay with "Dino"

If your looking for info on manual- automatic transmissions-power steering-differential go to

why not just take your diff pan off. and reseal the pan and fill it with oil. after all you got take the pan off anyways to drain all the oil out. save yourself some money on the autoRX.

Auto-Rx is to clean the differential, oil is not going to do that if you dropped the pan every week.

The waste is to have metal failure do to poor lubrication. Oil does not lubricate through dirt.

I took the diff cover off and cleaned all with Brakleen solvent 4k miles ago. Put on new FelPro gasket with a small bead of red high temp RTV sealant to hold it in place. It is not this seal that is leaking, rather it is the seal in the front of the differential where the driveshaft bolts up. I am hoping I don't have to drop the driveshaft or whatever to put in a new seal.

I expect the Auto-Rx to clean the diff as well help condition the seal. And if it doesn't, then I'm only out a couple of qts of grease. (I already have the A-Rx on the shelf.)

tjones-

That seal on your differential is a "known" issue and if AutoRx doesn't resolves the problem, replace it with a new one instead.

IMHO I would usually replace it with a new seal, replace all the rear diff oils and then move on with life (Assuming that the 2 other seals on each end of the axle are holding up very well).
