Anyone see this?

OK read all the posts and looks like M1 will have to rebutt this though i do not think there is a rampant falure rate with M1

still like to know numbers if wear is 1ppm vs 4ppm than not big deal if 10ppm vs 40ppm then a big deal need more details of test data.

Mobil 1 has certainly shown to be very good oil when viewed from a thermal/oxidative or TBN retention POV. But M1 is certainly kicking out high iron in a lot of used oil analysis -- particularly among the lighter weight oils (5w30, 10w30, 5W-20w).

This seems (?) to vary depending on the engine -- some engines do ok with M1, some seem to have significantly higher iron readings. Perhaps this difference is from engines don't have camshaft setups that require as robust anti-wear additives as other engines… ???

vortex … Valvoline was significantly better tham M1
M1 …27 ppm 4800 miles.
M1…M1 was significantly higher than Amsoil.
M1 …26 ppm iron after only 3k miles -- is this typical of this engine?

Now whether the higher iron is high enough to be a big concern -- hard to say.

Mobil just sucks. If it isn't their ever-cheapening.. err changing formula, then it's their [censored] Extended Protection Marketing, if it's not that, it's M1's abyssmal value, if it isnt that, it's M1's tendancy to high iron wear, if it's not that then it's M1's shameful grade retention, and if not that, then it's M1's markedly high oil consumption rate....

Mobil's regular oils show lower Fe wear than M1. No idea why.

All of Valvoline's oils show good results from what I've seen.

I use to buy into the Mobil 1 hype. Now I think it's just that, hype - and more marketing than any other lubricant.

I'll never again buy the stuff. Too many questions of higher wear, more oil consumption, and the fact it's expensive as heck.

More Nascar and NHRA crew chiefs use Valvoline in their own cars. That's why I use Valvoline. yup

I hear ya Drew. I guess I bought into too much of the hype.

You went overkill on the M1.

That was incredibly corny

As bruce said, if it's a small difference like 20 ppm vs 5 ppm, then it's really no big deal. It's a balancing act when making an oil and M1 is probably much better at preventing high temp deposits than Valvoline, but "may" give up a tad more wear. IMO. Hence M1/PP being the only two synthetics to meet Honda HTO-06.

It could also be a new Valvoline formulation. It's cyclical. They all try and leap one on another and depending on where the companies are at in releasing new oils etc. plays into it.

Not only what Johnny said, but the higher cost of raw materials would increase expenses, creating the need for other methods of optimizing profits. Hence, the silly marketing claims to hopefully gain an edge on their competition and perhaps a larger market share if it actually works.

In other words, since their expenses are skyrocketing while revenues are not, Valvoline NEEDS to be 4x better to make up for lower profits. And since their strategy of keeping their prices slightly lower than M1 was failing to give them enough market share, they are trying something else. Of course, they could have claimed 4x better long ago, but now there is an additional motivating factor.

Synpower hasn't gotten better. Maybe M1 has gotten worse to the point where Synpower is now x4 better.

Or at least their 5w30 has.

Same here! I dont use valvoline, and havent for years... In fact I've used Mobil 1 more than valvoline generally, but as I come of age, i realise exactly what you've said; too much marketing, too much price, not enough protection. The switch to GrIII base stocks, at $45dollars for a jug, was the asbsolute last disgrace. In the face of the parent company's net profits? That is just a slap in the face with a ridgid meat tube.
