The money in your Roth and 401k accounts are invested into funds - bonds, stocks, CDs - you probably have 12-15 to chose from with your employer's 401k and if you open your own account with a firm like Vanguard you will have 100's of choices...this is what you need to find out.
As for Ric Edelman, I've heard his radio show a couple times, but never really did any research to find out if he was a credible financial advisor or a salesperson.
A return of $225 on $5400 in less than 2 months is pretty impressive (who wouldn't take a 4% return in less than 2 mos), but without knowing the entire picture no one can say for sure. Take your statement and research it until you understand each investment it is in and what fees you are paying. I am guessing you're in a mix of stocks and bonds with the ratio being based on your age.
