Anyone here use store brand oils?

Advance = coastal
ST syn= warren
VIP = amalie

I'm like a homebrewer drinking Busch between batches.

If I can't get something better on sale these are my defaults.

my friend's father uses Ace Hardware branded 10w30 oil in his cars when it goes on sale. the bottle has no hint of who bottles it.
Same with Safeway branded oil too.
I'd never use it in my car only because it doesn't feel right buying motor oil at a hardware or grocery store where the automotive section is 4' by 4'

I have to admit I bought the 20oz SAE30 Ace Hardware oil for 2cycle motors and had no problems with it.. then again.. it wasn't for my lawnmower or rototiller either.

Thanks guys, and Eljefino in my area the Advance and Autozone oils are WPP/WNE. I dont think I saw much Carquest oils honestly. At my work when we ran out of oil once, we used napa conv 5w30 by the case.

I really can't picture a bottler like WPP or WNE formulating their own add pack. IMO....they use the add pack that comes with the bulk oil from the majors.

Valvoline is another story.....

Not much but have several cases of Meijer high mileage I got for $1.50 per quart. Use it in the '92 Aerostar 3.0.

The PQIA has done several tests on house-brand oils. Check them out if you want to convince yourself they won't blow up your motor.

Can they outperform name brand oils? I don't think so. But sometimes you can get incredible deals on them.

I think that WPP/WNE is NOT a bottler, they are a blender from what I read here. If they are a blender they are free to buy whatever additive pack they so choose correct? I doubt they use the add package that comes from the majors. They probably buy the base stocks from a major then buy a additive pack. The one jug of Super Tech oil I have from 2003 is in the shape of the old Mobil 1 oil jug, so that would have a different add pack also.

I have but it's rare.
For example, Napa here is very expensive for oil, so most of the time I get PP or Pennzoil Conventional or something like that heavily on sale at WalMart. I bought some oil from Superstore a couple years ago that was like a buck or 2 per quart, was black with a yellow label, seemed to run good in my Saturn at the time. I think it was a SOPUS oil, bottles were identical shape to FormulaShell.

If you don't recognise the brand and it's not in a major store with a good reputation I would recommend checking the current dozen or so used oil con bottles in the consumer warning section in the site above.
If you think you might decide to use a new label oil long term then it is good to do a VOA if you can't find one on this site OR the site above that tests new oils and fluids.
I'm looking around at some major supermarkets in Germany for a cheap engine oil, but can't find a diesel only oil yet to switch back to from the full synthetic in use at present.
I was lucky to get Blackstones to do a free VOA on my last German oil (They had not seen it used before), so I'm hoping to get another VOA on a new one next service IF i can find something sensible looking.

I have saw used oil analysis and VOA'S here on BITOG. Looks pretty safe to me.

I would have no problem using any oil with the API starburst SJ or newer. The API is a known entity and I trust that if they let that starburst on the bottle it's fine to use.

Our shop truck has 370K on Napa oil, Pep Boys Proline and Orileys oil. Thats all it ever gets.

I ran Napa and Carquest house brand oil in my truck for a couple of years, never had any problems with it. It would burn about half a quart by 2500 miles into the OCI. I changed to Quaker State a couple of years ago and it burned a lot less oil, maybe half a cup in the same amount of time. I am now running Kendal GT-1 syn blend, just did a new oil change yesterday, so time will tell how it does. Napa or Carquest oil is the only house brand I ever used, except for the 30W Super Tech I use in my lawn mower. I have never had any trouble with that either.

I've run SuperTech synthetic a few times in both my vehicles. I have a small stash of Napa synthetic I'll use here at some point.

I picked up a stash of store brand full synthetic a year and a half ago, on clearance, and sent in a sample to Blackstone.

The oil was from Strauss Auto Stores, now closed. I wanted to see if it was quality oil before I loaded up since I had heard that it was European Castrol via Canada for their store brand oil.

Sure enough the results came back as Castrol and it was a very high quality oil. I had to call Blackstone and let them know that it was a store brand oil from Strauss. All they could say was that "I really fell into a great deal"!!

After my conversation with Blackstone, I loaded up and bought all the full synthetic that they had on clearance.

BTW....You can take a look at the VOA that was posted on the board for Strauss Full Synthetic.
