Anyone here use bulk oil?

EXACTLY, Opelfever, guess some guys here misread the point about that. I have like 5-7 empty 5 and or 5.1 qt jugs. I would be paying a buck less or so so not too shabby. Dont know yet, as I have some Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 and 1 5qt jug of Quaker State Synthetic 0w20, and two 5qt jugs of Quaker State Conventional 5w20 to use up.


I do think the MC 5w20 synblend is a good product, just never tried it in the Civic.

Aside from the ripoff potential, some purchasing agents don't have a clue, either. At least up here, we do have some high profile suppliers (aside from the oil companies themselves) who only provide products with the latest specifications. But, there's always someone looking to undercut with a cheaper product, even if it's not a suitable product.

All I can say is at my work we use SAFETY KLEEN ECO POWER. and we have been using it since before I started. It is SN rated. I dont think some places would be using oil that isnt certified.

Bulk oil seems to be a contentious subject in the US. What exactly is bulk oil in the USA? Is it delivered by the tanker load or something? Here bulk oil for workshops would be delivered in 205L drums, they are plumbed in like a keg in a pub. There is no reason to suspect the oil is any different to what you get in a jug.

EXACTLY, and for those that dont see the tanker truck guy, I see ours every week 2 times a week. He has a paper log with what he is carrying for the whole day.

In my experience, shops here have been pretty good. However, there have been warnings about getting non-certified stuff in various industry publications. Perhaps only BITOGers should be allowed to be purchasing agents.

At least in a market like this one (a small city), it's fairly hard to bring in and market a substandard product when there are reputable distributors of the oil companies all over the place. Even the American shop standbys like Mag1 are fairly readily available to shops here.

Exactly, and if you take care of your bulk tank/etc, shouldnt be a issue.

I really have no problem with bulk oil except you might not get exactly what you think you are. Let me explain.
There is a local service station here that gets the bulk oil in 55 gallon drums and it is Quaker State. If you go in and get your oil changed and you request no certain brand, your car gets Quaker State motor oil. If you request a different brand, they charge you a little bit more per quart, but the oil that goes in your vehicle will come from quart containers.
One time I saw the station owner put Quaker State oil in a vehicle when the owner had requested Pennzoil. The station owner did it because it saved him about $.25 a quart over the other brands. Now I know there's nothing wrong with Quaker State and I've used it myself. But the car owner who requested Pennzoil thought he had purchased Pennzoil and he paid extra for Pennzoil.
That is probably the only problem I have with bulk oil. THAT, and I've seen some slow-selling oil in 55 gallon drums that had some deposits on the bottom of the barrel by the time all of the oil was used.

Yeah, I see your point. Our work has a label on the tank plus our oil provider is dilligent and makes sure we get what we want. Some shops are probably shady to save some $$
