Anyone here have a waste oil heater?

Hello and does anyone here have a waste oil heater in their shop? A friend of my brothers made his own, uses a drip system on it, and he loves it, keeps his shop nice and warm. One of the fleets near my uses one in their shop, but guy that maintains it says when he cleans it there is always a black goo stuff in bottom of it. I imagine that fleet does not have any filters on the system.

My buddy has one; I give him all of my used oil including transmission fluid.

He loves it.

The repair shop at work uses a waste oil furnace to heat the shop. Works great and you never have to worry about running out of old oil with the trucks getting oil changes at 40 liters per change plus I bring my used oil in and dump it in the tank.

Yeah, they talked about getting one at our shop at work. I do see a lot of oil recyclers out and about though.

I really wish we had one of these at our shop, we probably recycle about 5000 gallons of waste oil a year because our heater uses heating oil. Id much rather "sacrifice" the 300-400 gallons for heating oil we use at the shop every winter.

The shop where I work uses waste oil for heat. The heater makes plenty of heat, but does require annual maintenance to remove the ash that builds up inside and adjust the flame.

If someone makes the mistake of shutting it off overnight that becomes a problem. Once the waste oil in the tank gets cold the pump doesn't supply enough volume to run the heater.

I used to work in a shop that had one. It would build up with this hard, white ash that had to be cleaned once or twice a year. It was an all day job, even using a powered wire brush.
There is also a shop in my home town that had one malfuction during the weekend and caused over $200,000 damage to the interior of his shop and the equipment in it. His shop was shut down for over a month while a cleaning crew worked in there to get the whole shop clean. The insurance company was not happy.

You need a smudge pot. Just vent it to the outside.
