Anyone have sinus surgery recently?

I'm headed off to have surgery on my sinuses to fix a "markedly" deviated septum and a bunch of soft tissue that is obstructing my airway later this month and want to know about what I'm going to be up against... My boss's wife is an RN in the operating room and said it's changed a lot over the past years. She thinks I'll be down for a bit but back in a couple of days.

By the sounds of it, I'll be in and out of the hospital the same day but will have to return numerous times for regular vacuuming.

Any words on recovery time? They told me to take a week off of work? Seems a bit long. Also I'm curious if your experience was positive? Did you benefit from it?

I have every confidence in my Dr as he seems very sharp and well versed. He also scores good reviews from the boss's wife who's worked with him several times. All in all, I'm ready for this be done with and look forward to breathing easy.

I would do it again. Worst part is the gauze packing in the nose requiring mouth breathing. Test that beforehand and see if you can handle it, my wife can't. Most are put to sleep, not me. Valium was enough to keep me calm while the Dr's hammer and chisel filled a cup with bone. Talked to him as he did it. Good fortune.

I had some polups removed from my nose and my adenoids taken out about a year ago, all they did was take me too a room and put me to sleep and I woke up in a room in a bed and I got some sweet pain pills, but oh god was it [censored] I couldn't swallow with out being in a lot of pain for 2 weeks.. that's the adenoids though, not the nose. the nose was a dull solid pain for about 5 days

I can handle the mouth breathing for sure... Been doing it off and on for years. Doc said it could take up to 2 hours and I would be anesthetized. It sounds like they've all but done away with the gauze. He said something about shunts instead, claiming that the thinking has changed on this subject???

Brenden, I hear you on the pain man... I had tonsils taken out at age 27. It gave me a new found respect for the kids who can have i done then go home and play as if nothing happened. I'm no whiner, but that was quite uncomfortable. The odd thing was that it really took the wind out of my sails. I had no energy - maybe it was the poor diet? Towards the end, I found Ensure (the smoothie stuff for the elderly) and that helped.

Oddly enough, it's because of that surgery that I found out how bad my nose was. They gave me a massive anti-inflammatory of some kind and man, what huge difference!!! I thought all was cured, but it eventually went away.

Yea I had it done under mild sedation, watched the doc break my nose and reset it...but felt no pain. Afterwards they put packing in for about 20 mins just til the bleeding stopped. They used a plastic shunt to hold everything in place.
