I picked up a 2012 Volvo XC60 R-Design T6 for my lot inventory this weekend. It has a transversely mounted 3.0 Inline 6 turbo. 325hp/350ish torque if I remember right. Design and quality is good(hands down better than Land Rover/Jaguar) but I'm sure they all have their mechanical issues...although I don't think anything can get much worse than JLR 5.0 V8s.

I am very impressed with the car but I already have a buyer - plus I'm not a fan of owning older cars personally. Apparently they stopped making the 3.0 I6 around 2016 and replaced them with a T5 2.0T/tuned 2.0T badged as T6. They dropped T6 all together with their current line.

My question is: Are the T5s any good power/performance wise? Numbers on paper seems about average compared to the mercedes/audi/bmw non-performance equivalent. The T8 plug in "polestar engineered" seems very inticing but pushing $70k MSRP and are fairly hard to come by used.

Are T5 engines any good? Are there any aftermarket support for the 2.0T? This XC60 is good enough to make me buy a Volvo.

I had an 05 S60R 6-speed with the old 2.5 T5 turbo, about 300hp. Super comfy seats, very well designed interior and the coolest shifter. Had tons of annoying things that made themselves obvious every time you drove the car. The all wheel drive system was very incompetent, front wheel peels all day long and only spins the rear when it’s too late. They need a sticker that says “CAUTION:WIDE TURNS” people will laugh at you when you try to park it.

bad PCV blew out every seal on top, not that hard of a job. the timing belt and water pump wasn’t the end of the world either. ended up selling it and getting a 92 Audi S4, also had a 2.5 5 cylinder engine with the same exact turbo. much better car for indiana winters, on studded tires you could drive like a complete madman.

I hope they fixed the boat turn circle, otherwise I’d never a consider a newer volvo.

I've always thought the S60Rs were cool sleepers but they were just too old for me to ever want to own(this was 10 years ago). I can fix it myself but I tend to lose interest when too many small issues appear. To fix or not to fix = just sell it.

Unless I can find a Volvo T8 I'll probably get a Ford Edge ST eventually. I don't mind volvo quality just want something that can move but blend in. For some reason as I get older Im more discreet now. I used to dream of Ms and AMGs but they are too flashy.

I drove a V90 Cross Country T6 from Minnesota back to Georgia a few months back - the T6 is both supercharged and turbocharged with IIRC ~300HP (can't remember torque figure). Here is my rental review - https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/t...-v90-cross-country.333502/page-2#post-5562183

I was not a huge fan of the power delivery, it felt erratic/non-linear during normal acceleration that I am guessing was due to the handoff from the supercharger to turbocharger. Fuel economy was middling and it required premium fuel. It was a fabulous car though overall - the powertrain left a little to be desired. I will say when pushed it did not sound like your typical forced induction turbo 4, had a nice growl to it.

T5 means something different now than it did 15 years ago. The T5 15 years ago was a bulletproof, iron, reliable I5 with a low pressure turbo. If you kept the pcv system happy, this thing would burn gas all day long as much as you want. The newer T5 at some point just became a variant of turbo 4, I believe. The 4 has had some teething pains... marked with oil consumption up to around 2013. I did look at a newer “t5”, maybe a 2016, last year and it seemed well-sorted.

I’ll say this.... I’ve had three volvos and enjoyed all of them immensely. The ergonomics, seats, well-thought out controls are excellent. They kinda make you feel a bit special without putting on airs (Or they did for me). There were a lot of thoughtful design details. I really liked mine.

there is limited aftermarket support, however. People do mod them but you have to “speak Volvo“ before you just try to start adding parts like larger turbos and injectors. Your Volvo will not reward you for such foolishness. My favorite was an 09 s60 turbo - it had as much power as it needed, truly fun, tossable little car that was willing to be scrappy or sedate.
