It's oilBabe's turn to get a new iPhone and they announced the 17 series.

More evolutionary, not revolutionary changes.

I think the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be a good fit for her and an apt replacement for her iPhone 15 Pro Max.

(And to the BITOG tightwads that are still rocking a flip phone, we buy ours outright and pass them on. Her mom will get her 15PM)

oilBabe takes a lot of trips now that she's retired and the upgraded cameras should be a winner with her. We will see if the battery life projections pan out.

She's running out of room in her 256GB model, so it's 512GB this go around.

I've been playing with the beta of iOS 26 on a test phone. (The RC just installed as I write.) Some things I like and others will take some time acclimate.

It was the first time I watched an Apple event. They can certainly make a production out of a new product launch.

What say the good people of BITOG?

Apple certainly makes an event of their new phones, but I think for most people, they were content with the functionality of whatever they have, minus five or so generations. Apple phones will hold up, but you have to manage memory, software and changing batteries when needed.

I'll probably get one.

I have a regular 16 and would like a bigger screen, so I'll get a 17.

Timing was good as we got the 16 Pro free ($27.77/mo with a $27.77 mo credit, and the 5G welcome voice/data also free since 4th Verizon line on the account). Problem is it's for an 11 y.o. They said we can switch the hardware among the family but blah blah blah 11 y.o. is using a cellular watch with number share, why we got the free 16 pro. So yes, I'm excited the 17 is launching making 16 pros free.

Price seems to be going down. I thought my 13 Pro 256 when the 14 launched at $309 was a great deal. Now the last get is $0 when the new gen comes out.

I buy one every few years. My wife has my Third Generation SE, which was mine. I have a 16 I bought last year. Her battery has 89% life remaining, after 9 months I still have 100% life remaining. Once she gets to 80% I'll give her mine and probably get the 18. lol That hand me down method has worked well for us for quite a few years now. I thought I might be getting a 17, but at the rate our batteries degrade I have a feeling we'll be skipping the 17.

My wife's XS max was at 90% after 3 years. Don't know why. I had gotten the Xs (smaller battery) and it was around 70% after 3 years. both had the optimize etc. on. I did and do often have mine charging in the car, and she, doesn't. Her way is smarter. I use my phone for on call and so I'm that risk averse human, get nervous when it's "only" 35% charged....with new cars having charging pads I would think more and more people constantly charge their phones in the car

The base 17 seems to be a solid value (relatively speaking, there is the "Apple Tax")

The screen and camera upgrades as well as the base storage starting at 256GB now make it a compelling phone.

For those who may have an older Pro tier, it might be worth considering the base model 17 as a replacement if the additional pro features seem a bit much.

We are an Apple house, we have 3 MacBooks, 4 iPads, 4 iPhones, 4 Watches plus AirPods to match. I haven't watched the event, just looked over the website. I am going to try to watch it this week to understand more. However, I'm expecting a new MacBreak Weekly in my podcast feed today and a new iOS Today on Friday to get deep dives into the new models.

I agree evolutionary.

I like the idea of the Air and the fact that it's not crazy priced (comparatively). I assume they're getting on board with computation photography like Google has been doing with the Pixel for a few years. One thing I'm curious about is that's a thin phone with a big bump, how does that bump feel.

The 17 Pro looks nice, once again big focus on camera updates. Very evolutionary.

The 17 looks nice, good entry model. Very evolutionary.

AirPods Pro 3 with heart rate and translation. I feel like they're going for the people that don't want a watch dinging on their wrist or have conventional watches that they love with heart rate add on. The translation would be cool if I was in a situation where I needed that regularly. Not a reason for me to buy them, but I'd have them delivered on day 1 if it was. I like that they'll come with 5 ear tips. Makes me wonder if I can use those tips on my AirPods Pro 2.

Watch continues with the health market. Nice to see hypertension notifications. SatCom for the Ultra is good, given it's intended market. Nice to see the SE get always on, too bad for my daughters who got a SE2 the other month lol

Do I want a 17 Pro Max? Yes, new phones are fun. Am I getting one? No.

My 13 Pro Max is going to get another year. My battery is currently registering 87% and everything is running nice. My wife's 13 Pro Max's battery dipped below 80% so we got her a new battery last month at an Apple Store for $89 installed in just a couple hours. When my battery craps out, I'll do the same. I have different charging habits than she does.

We got them brand new on day 1, so we're 4 years in with a year or two left before we update. Especially good considering that I don't put my phone in a case unless I'm going to the race track or theme park. Shoot, I dropped my phone in the shop at work the other year and I flipped on the deburring wheel and took the marks out of the corner. These phones are a lot tougher than most people give them credit for.

I'm holding out for a folding iPhone. There are plenty of times where I want more than my phone and less than my iPad, but I don't want to buy an iPad Mini.

I’m the type who usually gets a new iPhone every five years or so but I rarely ever get the latest version, as my provider used to offer me free ones but they were usually one generation behind. But last year when I was having trouble with my iPhone XR I ended up getting the 16 because the price difference wasn’t that much higher than the 15. And since I was buying it outright I figured I could get longer time with the 16 before they stopped the updates.

So hopefully I won’t have to replace my 16 until the 21 or 22 comes out 🤓

Most of the time I slow charge mine with my computer when it gets to around 20%, then charge it to 80%, via the software in battery management. I charge every two to three days! Once in a while I will charge it to 100%, but not often. If I'm using WAZE in the car I plug it into the cigarette lighter charger or the USB port. OTOH my wife uses the phone a lot more and charges it a lot more, and to 100%. I can't believe how long the battery lasted in her phone. I'm not one of those people glued to a cell phone.

That's a solid plan.

Ours stay in the family, so while we buy a phone a year (okay, I pick up a phone on FB marketplace play with them and then sell them on, usually for what I paid, sometimes, like the iPhone 13 mini I had, for more) the phone goes through two people before it gets sold on. A device spends 4 years in the family. I just got the iPhone 12 Pro oilBabe got in 2021 back from the youngest. Gave her a 14 Pro for her trip to Europe and said keep it.

My employer does the same. I got a base model iPhone 15 just as the 16 was coming out IIRC. Instead of carrying two phones, my work line is a second active eSIM on my device and the employer supplied phone sits in a drawer as a spare. I turn it on about once a month so it can check in with the digital overlords and install updates.

I have the required work digital overlord software installed on my personal 16 Pro I brought in as a BYOD device.

I'd rather have a phone allowance and have my line be added to their plan, but the company provided phone comes with replacement coverage and support from a 3rd party provider.

I've set mine to charge to 90% as I'm a pretty heavy user. I know 80% is the target for max battery life. I use my phone a fair bit and like that extra 10%.
