They have an oil at my local Wal Mart called either Excel or Accel or something like that. They only have a small amount and I saw a guy buy a quart of it so I walked over and checked out a bottle. It was 10w-40 and only met the SF grade! I thought to myself that the guy could have had new SM Super Tech for 97 cents if he wanted to go cheap.

Think it's made by Warren too. Horrible stuff, and there's no reason to buy it when ST is so close in price. Some people are stupid!
They make Non detergent 30 weight too. Great all purpose oil for around the house. Terrible inside a modern engine!
Similar stuff is sold at Autozone, they call it "old vehicle (pre 1988) formula".
It's a rule that if you use such lousy oil, you must leave the container either crushed in the parking lot or floating around the bed of your rusty pickup truck.

My Sears Rototiller (like 30-40 years old) takes SAE MT oil I think. So maybe this would be good.

The irony of it is that many of the people who have cars that drink oil (and fog the highway) seem to pay $2 for some SF oil at the filling station because they can only afford to buy a bottle at a time, splitting there reserve cash (left over from beer and cigarettes) between a few gallons of gas and a quart of junky, overpriced oil. If they quit the habits they could stock decent oil when on sale. Oh well, guess it's a matter of priorities.
And the scratch lottery tickets... you can't expect them to give up those scratch lottery tickets can you?

One thing the Non detergent 30 weight would certainly be good for is a controlled break-in of an engine.quote:

This Non detergent 30 weight break-in would only be advised for the alert, careful mechanic.
You'd get the break-in over & done with in a few hundred miles rather than thousands. Then drain it out & put in proper oil.
