Anyone ever get hit by a cop car or any other emergency vehicle? Always wondered how that plays out when they are at fault.

Long story short, this cop decides he's going to pull off somewhere in the gas station parking lot for the 5th time in about 5 minutes. Pretty sure he was trying to do paperwork or something, but he nearly backed into me when it looked like he was about to pull out of the lot and onto the main road. Not sure who backs up right there, especially with someone behind him, that person being me. I was wailing on the horn and he backed up about 3ft before seeing me back there. Then proceeds to still attempt to make it into his parking spot and then yell out the window at me like it's my fault. I didn't even put my window down to hear what he said, but the look on his face wasn't a happy one, so I just shook my head and proceeded on since technically no vehicle contact had occurred. Anyways, I wondered what happens in these cases. I do know technically a neighboring department has to write up the police report. Also, I tend to be very aware of my surroundings while getting gas for obvious reasons, so that's how I noticed how he was in 5 diffferent areas within just a few minutes. Thought it was very odd.

Your insurance will have to take care of it. My understanding is that cities, counties, etc effectively don't have "auto insurance" coverage, they are self-insured along with qualified immunity. They may have a money fund that they can choose to pay out of, i.e. wheel/tire damage from potholes, but larger claims, they either ignore them or fight them.

That is what I'm asking. What happened in that case? Lol
My friend spent the day in the police department. Mostly on the phone with his insurance company and signing 4 or 5 tickets. Not to mention dealing with the expected nonsense. In a sense, he never recovered from the setback. Both cars were badly damaged, he had to replace his car right away. He purchased a new Corolla which he could not afford, and he was on the hook for charges the insurance company did not want to pay. If I remember it was Progressive. But I'll have to ask him.

While he should not have driven down the hill in the snow, we all know that once you poke the nose over the top, you can't stop.

I think his tires were near slicks.

I backed into a police car when I was 20 or 21 with my ratty old dog box GMC van that had no windows in the back except a round porthole in the usual place high on the back panel. I was parked in a diagonal parking space beside an alley and was leaning way back looking out the porthole for any cars and the cop came out the alley and stopped right beside me where I couldn't see him. Happened on Main St in the small town I grew up in. They had to call another car in to investigate. No doubt who's fault it was. No drama.

I rode my quad down the dirt road to get my mail. Stopped opened the door, got my mail and was trying to figure out how to transport the 2 boxes back home when a sheriff came screaming up,brakes locked and rear ended me.

Almost knocked me off the quad.

He proceeded to tell at me that I can't be riding in the area which is true but he didn't need to hit me. Plus I was just getting the mail.

Then he sped off.

That's a hit and run lol what did you do?

One of my mates got hit by a cop car. The cop started blasting my mate saying how he would lose his licence etc. My mate flashed his badge and told the junior cop to pull his head in and to call his superior to come down to sort everything out.
My mates vehicle was a write off and he got paid out for it, but I suspect had he been a civilian without a dashcam things might have played out differently.

You guessed it
Technically everyone pays for the vehicle they hit. So if someone comes behind you and slams you into the vehicle in front of you, then the guy that rear ended you, pays for the back of your car and you pay for the back of the car you slid into etc. Although, I'm not sure where some idiot backs up into you in an area that's not appropriate to back up in comes into play like what nearly happened in my case. I'm just glad he never hit me.

I don't see why he would lose his license. It's an accident.

Australia things.
My mate would probably have been sent to court and they’d decide the fate of his licence, but it’s relatively easy to lose, or have your car seized if you’re accused of hooning or dangerous driving.

I backed into a cop once… I was helping push some people out of the snow, a snow plow came by and he asked if I’d back my truck up a bit…. Just bumped his push bar, absolutely no damage. His exact words were “there’s no damage to your truck? Please don’t make me fill out paperwork…”

There was no paperwork filled out and we went on our merry ways.
