Anyone ever do their own frying pan test?

I'm probably going to use the grill outside to avoid smoking up the place. I want to compare any brand conventional oil on the grill in a aluminum foil cup vs Amsoil 0w-20. Anyone ever try it?

I always wanted to. Are you going to use a oil cooking thermometer or how are you going to measure the temp?

Be sure and take pics!

I won't be able to do it until sometime this week. I'm not even going to take the temp. It's going to be a very unscientific test. I'm just going to cook the ____ out of both and see what happens. When/if I do it I'll let you know. I know JAG did some testing also.

waited till the burner was bright red hot under pan poured redline 10w30 and it burned up in a sec. same for their d-4 transmission fluid...i didn't have the temp therm. so it prob was hotter then the oil was rated.

Go for it buster. I need someone else testing oils too! Try not to let the temp get above the flash point or the experiment is ruined because the oil may burn. Paper burns at around 454 F so put a piece of paper in the grill first. If it burns, lower the temp.

Being a chef in my spare time, since BITOG takes up most of it, if you happen to have one of those older Visions sauce pans buster, use that. They can hold a melted aluminum sauce pan, so they will be more than adequate for the flash point of any oil out there. Plus, you won't have the flimsy foil container to worry about breaking up and dropped that 400F+ oil on someplace that it shouldn't be dropped...

BTW, the only two conventional oils I tested were API SL or SJ (?) 30 wt Pennzoil straight wt dino and CI-4+ Delo 15w40. The former got amazingly nasty black deposits (without burning) while synthetics got none in same conditions. These black deposits would not come off unless sanded off with sandpaper.

The Delo got a thick layer of nearly clear varnish in the bottom of the cup while synthetics got none in same conditions. I then poured Lubromoly 0W-40 into the varnished cup after pouring out the Delo and heated it. The Lubromoly dissolved the varnish.

Been there, done that...highly unscientific but alot of fun.I used baby food jar lids and a torch.Oh and by the way when you go to dump the flaming samples of burning oil make sure it's not raining

I'm in the process of testing amsoil 0w-20 vs shell api sm 5w30. I'm not a scientist but I didn't everything as meticulously as possible. I would have rather compared shell 5w-20 but I used what I had. The temps are 400 degrees and the shell is buring off faster and getting really dark. Amsoil is unchanged after 8 minutes. I'll post pictures later.

The 1985 US pennies have copper plating problems. Ask a numismatist. The pennies of 1985 deteriorate on their own. The oil test should have been done with three 2006 pennies, not two.
