Anybody Here ever moved from Large House to Tiny H

Delicate balance. I recently bought a house around 1400 sq feet (we dont include basement sq footage in count here..no idea why) and its a 3bdrm not too big 7000 sq foot lot. It is upkeep but its the right size since we plan to have 2 children. I dont think its about small or big..its about finding the right size..not too big or too small. I dont have a garage but have the space to add one and is in future plans.

Maybe downsizing to a smaller house of say 1500sq feet would be a good step? Whats tiny in your eyes?

We did it and are much happier now. Quieter location, more room (land) for the dogs, nicer neighbourhood, no stairs (good for me), and more. You have to just have to get rid of 'stuff', but you will find things that you have saved for years and never used, just be brutal, but selective.

What you DON'T want,is a small house with a bunch of tiny rooms. We looked at a few smallish houses that had 4br/2btrm and the rooms were so small that the house was basically useless. A smallish house with 2br/1btrm is fine though and as long as it has an open floor plan. I also hate those dumb arched openings leading to other rooms. Makes the house feel even smaller.

My previous and current homes were almost the same as yours.

I sold 2,850 SF 4 bedroom 2.5 bath on 8,000 SF lot in Irvine, CA year and a half ago(after owning it for 17 years).

Used the equity to pay for 1,500 SF 3 bedroom 2 bath on 5,000 SF lot in the neighboring city of Lake Forest, CA.

The new house is much easier to clean, uses less utilities to cool/heat. The only missing with new house is the sunset view of the old house.

My friend built a big garage for their boats, trucks, etc. They then took the top and made it into an apartment. The master bedroom looks out over the Arkansas river -- a beautiful view

Small lot and big outbuildings don't really seem to go together. If you get a few acres+, you don't have to mow and maintain the whole thing like a golf course. I only mow maybe a half acre around our house and would do less but the kids need some lawn to play on. I also do a strip along each side of our driveway to the road. Takes no time at all with the riding mower.
Personally I like watching the natural succession of plants turn some of our fields back into forest, and the wildlife move in again.

We plan to stay here forever but would consider moving into a smaller place (a condo maybe) if our health deteriorates.

My understanding is that people don't do well in the truly tiny houses so I'd suggest looking into that carefully if that is what you're considering.


I imaging my tiny house will end up around 1000 plus sf...

Our house id about 12-1300' and I'm so glad we never fell into the bigger is better trend. At one time there was 4 people living here, but each kid still had his own bedroom and everyone got along well. Now, the house is long paid for and I'm living the good life (being able to take it easy and not work so hard). Enjoying semi-retirement.

For me I would be happy to live in a 5,581 sqft house with 1 acre of land to have some farm animals to significantly reduce property tax on it. I would never live in Michael Jordan's 56,000-square-foot mansion in Highland Park or Mark Cuban's masion below

It's like Micheal Keaton as Bruce Wayne said in the 1989's movie Batman; to Vicky I don't think I'll ever been in this (dining)room before

edit; so I get the status of the "Jones" but Jordan now can't even sell it nor does he want to live in such a place.

I'm doing the same thing in a couple of years and am looking forward to it. The big yard, long driveway, big house was great 16 years ago but is now becoming a burden.

Our first house was about 1150 sq ft. Had 3 smallish bedrooms. That was a good overall size but I'd cut it back to 2 bedrooms, or even better 1 bedroom plus a bedroom and bathroom for guests in the basement.

Some people are trying to downsize to 500 sq ft or even smaller. I've heard that doesn't work too well. Hardly any of them end up living there for any length of time.
