At the end of the day it's all about survival of the fittest.

Those who are flexible enough, will find other ways of making ends meet. They may not have the fancy rides or lifestyle they used to have, but they are ok with this and are able to appreciate the small luxuries in life.

Those who cannot appreciate the small things and are stuck in their old ways (how they earn a living, amount of income etc.) will suffer.

I don't usually drink (actually never) but I'm thinking about it.

My favorite large bottle of wine costs 12 bucks and I can drink half of it at a time.. tastes comparable to cranberry juice just less sugar (and I only like wine if it is sweet.)

A lot of beers taste "the same/okay" and wine tastes NASTY if it's bitter, or "supposed to be"...

I have an occasional beer or a glass of wine with certain foods. Very rarely will I indulge in gin or bourbon and only in very limited quantities. I don't care for either dehydration or water retention. My alcohol consumption has been consistently sporadic and unaffected by the plague.

I have been in quarantine since last Friday after coming in contact with three relatives that have tested positive and are mildly sick.
My quarantine stash is a bottle of Bourbon, Vodka, Tequila, Brandy and pot edibles.
I'm set to ride it out.

I tell people this ’illness’ made millions of people go from living the America Dream...... to living the American Nightmare and they think I’m kidding around.

2021 will get bad for many in the USA.

Sorry to hear about the people you know ending their life.
It wasn't the virus. It was the hysterical overreaction to the virus. The people have one thing in common: their income was based heavily (or entirely) on conventions and trade shows. They had no income, no prospect of any income, and no hope for any improvement.

It's basically all or nothing. Seems like partial doesn't really work as we can now see. Hindsight is always 100%.

I drink more in December than all other months of the year combined. The holidays are not a good time of the year for me. Weeks of preparation and meticulous cleaning for the same 5 family members that we see every week to come over. God forbid it looks like somebody actually lives in this house. Extreme overplaying of the same Christmas songs over and over to the point my ears bleed. Obligatory buying presents for cousins I haven't seen in years and otherwise doesn't acknowledge our existence. Spending hundreds on toys for the kids, the majority of which will get played with once (or not at all) and then left to collect dust in the closet despite my 9 year old saying for weeks prior to Christmas that she just had to have it. Forcing myself to be nice to people at Christmas parties that I otherwise can't stand to be around, much less talk to. I lost my father around Christmas. I also lost my closest cousin and best friend around Christmas.

Worst of all though... Christmas just brings out the very worst in people, starting with Black Friday. It's become all about greed and self-interest. The "giving" part of Christmas was lost long ago.

Therefore... I find myself being a recluse this time of year and enjoying one of the few things I do look forward to this time of year... eggnog and rum.

You bring up a lot of good points. I think this year you see many people that cannot adapt and be grateful for what they have. Material things aren't the most important to me. I like to have nice things, but I don't want those things controlling me.

It's a shame, but a true reflection of society and what we've become.

Mine ramped up over the pandemic, then I realized it was getting in the way of life: just didn't feel like it was actually adding anything (unlike before where it was enjoyable and a nice cap to the day, good way to unwind and relax, etc)--so haven't had any in the last couple of weeks. Beer hadn't been agreeing with for a while anyhow, used to love IPA. Drink a lot of seltzer now instead.

Unfortunately lots of people in the USA have no income, no prospect of any income, and no hope for any improvement.

Lots of people are living in LaLa Land because it has not affected them and no loss of their job / income.

Not good when your kids are hungry and refrigerator is empty....
