My wife and son decided to get me a Wolverine Oil Pan heater, w/o me knowing it. Very nice of them. I had a glance at the directions, and its the usual make sure the surface is clean and free or grease, oil etc.

However my concern is they want the paint removed from the oil pan where the heater will attach to the pan. Then caulk around the edges with caulking they supply. I'm not really thrilled about removing paint for fear of the pan rotting under the heat element, or around it since this vehicle will see a lot or salty roads.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I used a few years ago on a 1987 Mazda B2000, I followed the directions and sanded the area where the "patch" adhesives to, after a few years I didn't notice any rust.

Did you rough it up or remove the paint?

Thanks,

I just scuffed the pan up a bit to make sure the adhesive would stick properly on my car. No paint removal and it's been holding up fine for two years now.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to do. I have this thing about removing paint and leaving raw metal to salt and the elements. I tend to keep vehicles for a very long time, and I've seen oil pans leak because of rot.

I use Katz oil pan heaters. They do not have a adhesive, so I use the red RTV silicone by Permitex. Apply it on the pad and stick in on a clean oil pan. Lasts for years.
