Hi,

I am curious what toyo tire became the replacement for the A05. We had these as OE on our previa and were really happy with them - they still had tread left after 80k miles of use.

I think the proxes TPT may be the correct replacement, but I am not sure.

Any insight would be great.

Thanks,

JMH

I put the Proxes TPTs on my Civic (205/55-16). They ride much better (ride quality, tracking, performance, braking, hydroplaning resistance, and noise) than my OEM Bridgestones. They even did pretty good this winter with our small amounts of snow and mostly ice.

I'm upgrading to OEM 17" wheels, so I will be going to a summer tire for these and keeping my 16" wheels with my TPTs for what winter we have here.

I put Toyo TPT Proxes on my 2004 Accord and like them much better than the OEM Michelins. Slightly noisier, slightly lower mileage, but much better traction, wet and dry.

Some toyo products are worth the money and some arent...there is alot of hype surrounding them, and thats all it is; hype.

Their high performance tires are pretty much trash...poor grip (dry, wet) and have little communication to the driver.

Their more touring tires seem to perform well from the few cars that I have driven with them. Dont know what size their new versado LX should be pretty good.

I have had a set of Toyo Eclipse tires on my Nissan Frontier, a very good tire. Good grip in the rain, decent in the snow and fairly quiet as well. A very good value in my humble opinion.

I've had just the opposite experience with 3 sets of their high-performance tires (Proxes 4, Proxes T1-S). They actually communicate well, grip well, and are easy to balance at the limits of adhesion.

They are commonly critisized for having soft sidewalls, although I find that they just like a little more pressure than other brands.

The TPT's are good tires in the summer but absolutely terrible in the winter. I replaced the factory michelins with these on my wife's acura. They were so dangerous in the snow compared to the michelins I had to go out and buy a second set of snow tires/rims for her car.

Be warned. If you lived in texas, california or mexico, they'd probably be a great choice.

Toyo Z800 Ultras on a '96 Accord. These according to Les Schwab were top of the line tires. They have very poor wet traction and non-existent snow/ice traction.

The Toyo tires are poor performing and overpriced compared to other good tires on the market.

I expect to be in a position to agree with that if these things don't wear like iron. They stick like a tire that should wear like iron, so if they wear that way, then it's fair game. They weren't cheap either.

I replaced the OE Toyo tires on our Previa with Michelin X-Radials from Costco.

Of course, I don't see any snow where I live. After 38k miles, I still have 6/32" remaining. The tire pressure is set at 38 psi and my dad only drives it on the highway (very little cornering), which is probably why they are lasting so long.

I have some Toyo Proxes S/T.

For "sportier" tires, they don't really seem all *that* sticky. But their treadwear is pretty high and they are all-seasons, if I can get decent treadwear out of them they will be worth it.

They have decent winter traction though for all-seasons. They are M+S rated, but I think their decent snow traction comes from the tread depth, its like 11 or 12 32nds. Once they wear to probably 1/2 their life I expect the snow handling capabilities to drop off drastically.

All and all I guess if they wear like the wear rating indicates they aren't that bad of a tires. But there are probably better alternatives.

If the Proxes4 are anything like the Proxes S/T I would say they aren't worth it IMO. They are more expensive as well.

There are other tires on the market that last as long as the Toyo and provide notably better traction. I have found Michelin and Hankook to be just as durable and offer much better traction in wet, snow and ice. They are a much better value in my opinion. Also, the Hankooks are significantly lower priced than the Toyos.

Since you have experience with both, how have you found the Hankooks to compare to the Michelins? And which ones, by the way?

TIA,

When I bought my VW Jetta a few years ago it came with Toyo Spectrum tires from the previous owner. The tires seemed a little noisy, but not annoyingly so. Treadwear in the 2 1/2 years I drove the car was great - I lost maybe 25% in 25k miles. Handling was great, wet or dry. The only problem I had, which was a BIG one for me, was traction in snow. It was nonexistent. It was so bad that I dreaded having to drive anywhere when there was snow or ice on the ground. I ended up getting a set of Hankook W404 snow tires for the winter and was blown away by their performance. I can't compare to other snow tires since they are the only ones I've ever used, but I was able to plow through snow with the Hankooks while 4WD's were spinning all four tires.

Anyway, I liked the Toyo's and wouldn't hesitate to buy them again if I didn't have to worry about snow. I also recommend Hankook snow tires as a cheap alternative to Blizzaks. I still can't believe how well they worked.

I have OEM Toyo Proxes on my 3i. I guess the wear is pretty good for having 20,000 miles. I just do NOT like the snow traction, which is basically non-existent.

The handling is good with minimal sidewall flex. The 3i stays stuck to the road during high-speed cornering.

Having said this, I'm still looking at a different tire when it comes time to change them out.
