Little bit of round about backstory:

So dad (age 67) caught the car bug about a month ago...he found a small patch of rust on the undercarriage (nickle-quarter sized, which he sanded down and sprayed Flex Seal Brite over), on his '05 Ford Freestyle. it is also approaching 100k.
so he decides to buy another vehicle.
Makes up his Mind, that he wants a Newer Dodge/Chrysler minivan, with the 3.6l, because he's driven some earlier models of this gen, with the older engines, and liked the handling, and the new 3.6 models get better hwy mpg, than his Freestyle.

"But it has to be able to Pull My boat" (~2000lbs, non braked trailer)

the local dodge dealer doesn't have any vans with the towing package in stock, warn him that adding his own hitch on a non equipped van "might void the warranty", etc. but they agree to look around their network and see if they can find one to his needs.
after that, he heads to the Ford Dealer (where he's bought their last 3 cars, all from the same salesman)they too don't have anything in stock that suits his punch list, but will "keep an eye out"
couple weeks go by, no word from dodge.
few days ago,(Saturday) the ford salesman call him up, says he has a car for him.
One owner, (he sold it to the folks who returned it/traded it in, i'm not sure)2012 Explorer, with the Locally built 3.5l V6, with the trailer package, and all the other toys on his list, only like 6800 mi on the Odo., and it gets SLIGHTLY better Mpg(1-2), than his Freestyle. for about $25k.

well, they are getting ready to leave on a moth long trip, "no Problem, it Should be done in the body shop by then"
What?
"Nothing Major, small Cosmetic Fender Bender, we'll be Glad to hold it for you until you get back from your Trip"

so that night, I drive over to the Dealer, to see if i can spot this car. it's parked, in the secured, fenced in portion of the lot, nose first with other cars on either side, so you can't see the front(where the damage is).

I tell him what i saw, they go over sunday afternoon, and do a little more poking than i did, still haven't gotten a clear description of the damage.
Monday, calls the dealer ship, his salesman not in that day.
Tuesday, dad goes back, talks to the salesman, they go look over the car, Salesman applies Light Pressure to go ahead and make the sale now (end of the month), and Dad Agrees to pay, their first price, never having driven this car, or even taking a "similarly equipped" model out on a test drive....

so...what should we look out for...

LOTS of electrical problems, some overheating issues, a couple transmission problems, and just overall lack of quality...If you don't believe me just do a google search and look at some reviews. But since its still under warranty hopefully whatever issues it has will be covered and will not re-occur.

I'm curious as to why the Dodge dealer didn't steer him to a Durango.

The Dodge usually wins comparisons vs the Explorer in ride and handling. (it's Mercedes Benz ML/GL based) He gets the 3.6 and it can tow over 5,000lbs.

The Explorers are basically Taurus wagons, and I havent heard the police was having too many issues with their Taurus PI models.Blasted things are all over the place here (Taurus PI).

The explorers don't have LOTS of electrical problems or really any other problems either. The problem with online reviews or any other for that matter is if people are happy with something they don't say anything. If they are unhappy it is the biggest piece in the world.
The sync will likely need an update, a new one just came out and they will do it under warranty.
I did put a water pump in a 3.5l engine yesterday which is what the explorer has in it. Step 1 is to remove the powertrain assembly. It comes out the bottom. Not a hard job but time consuming.
I think he will be happy with the Explorer, they are everywhere here.

Jeez, step one: remove powertrain! OMG.

But seriously, Exploders are not that bad, tend to be at least fairly reliable if a little thirsty.

The Durango's Epa estimate doesn't meet his Fuel Criteria of 25mpg hwy or better.
and dad's more of a ford guy anyway. Especially if he can get one with the Engine made here in town.(Currently the Duratec 3.5, previously the Vulcan 3.0, and others back to the Edsel engine the Plant was first built to make)

i think the main reason he was interested in the caravan, is with the exception of his Current Freestyle (Five Hundred/Taurus wagon), he's been Driving Minivans (5+aerostars, 3 windstars, and a safari)since the early 90's. and was driving station wagons before that since the mid-late 70's.

Surely you jest about having to pull the engine to replace the water pump...with dad getting the explorer, BOTH my parents cars have this engine, (moms is an '09 Taurus, w/55ish thousand miles)
that should be a fun one for the ford dealer to explain...

why would you buy a used car that has been smashed up? without looking at the damage first?

I would tell the salesman to scram, looks like they are purposely hiding the damage so he does not back out of the deal, I would run away from that dealership.

Sounds similar to my Dad's last car purchase - I never wanted to tell him that he overpaid. He can be impatient and bought the first thing he liked basically. At least they gave him a good trade-in deal (which was offset by the high selling price).

If the deal is done, the best thing you can do is say "It drives real nice, Dad. Glad you like it."

Head on over to: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=152 and read up.

The 2011 up to mid 2012's have plenty of issues, most have TSB's out now though and can be fixed. Beware of the Sync system in 2011's and 2012's, that's still sketchy.

I have a 2013 base 2WD, leased it new 4 months ago and generally I like it. This is my first domestic car and first Ford vehicle. The build quality is definitely below any foreign car I have owned. Mine with 3,600 miles on it has the following issues so far:

- Sometimes the cluster LCD display stays on even with the car off and doors locked.

- Front windows "studder" on the way down. (many have this issue, replacing motors and regulators fixes it)

- Ticking noise from transmission or drivetrain under low RPM load.

- Exhaust smell entering cabin under high RPM runs, it actually makes your eyes water. IE, getting on the highway and revving it from 4K-6K RPM's. This is also a known design flaw that Ford has a TSB out for but doesn't seem to be fixing the issue.

- Stuff in the paint in 5-6 different spots. Looks like some crud got trapped and painted over, about the size of a grain of sand. the one on the hood lip is actually about 1/4 x 1/4 inch of bubbled up goo. Missed that on inspection because I didn't open the hood.

- Squeak from between windshield and dash right in front of the driver.

SO, as you can see, not the best initial impressions from my Explorer. I'm not trying to bash Ford or the Explorer, I do like the way it drives, the look and interior feel. I also get about 23MPG average which is not bad. But all the initial "quirks" and issues I see, i'll more than likely be returning this one when the lease is up. Gave Ford a shot but they need to get their quality control figured out.

A few more things I have noticed if you do go check them out:

- This SUV is made for bigger people, the gaps in between your elbows and the arm rest is too big to use. I have a travel pillow in the car for longer trips so I can rest my arms with my hand on the side of the wheel. i'm 5'9" and 170Lbs.

- Floor it, and I mean all the way down. The power the Explorer puts out is really impressive but my 2WD really torque steers. My wife hates this and never floors it because it can get hairy to control.

- Some of the 2011's 2012's leaked water through the roof rails, check the 3rd row seatbelt for dampness and the spare tire well, that's usually where they leak.

If you look at Fuelly, *no one* is getting better mileage in the Explorer than the Freestyle, so I think he's going to be a bit disappointed in the real-world mileage. The FS has a smaller displacement engine, more efficient transmission and is lighter, and has smaller frontal area--so I'm not sure how the Explorer was supposed to pull off similar FE. Also, the Freestyle seems a bit under-rated in that department. My lifetime average is about 23.5 overall, and road trips are normally in the 26-28 range. That's with a packed vehicle and AWD.

It seems there are a few common issues, one of which is the smell of exhaust in the cabin when accelerating. Anytime you see a thread on a car-specific forum with 700 responses, you pretty much know it's a real issue. So, he'll probably want to check that out as it seems like they're having a hard time resolving the issue:

oh.. believe me, I'm holding my tongue on this deal...
but that's they way dad has always bought cars.he throws down cash @ the first things he likes. (tends to try and solve a lot of problems by throwing money at them honestly..)
heck, he bought the house the same way...

btw: no trade in, selling the freestyle to my sister($5k) to replace his (dad's)old windstar that is she & hubby's spare vehicle('03 with near 200k mi), he's borrowing $10k, and putting $15k cash down.

ok, new question from dad.
he asks me if there's anyway to tell if he'll need to have the boat trailer converted to LED's with the new car.

apparently one of his church buddies with a new caravan(LED tails), had to have his boat trailer relit/rewired with LED's, b/c the old incandescents wouldn't light up....

do the cars with factory led's, with a factory trailer pkg not "push" as much current?
anyone ever heard of this?

As long as he runs the trailer wiring through the vehicle's trailer wiring connection, he should be fine. It should supply the correct 12V to the trailer. It sounds like his buddy may have been "piggybacking" off the tail lamp wiring in the Caravan, which is not the ideal way to power trailer lamps.
