Any laptop with 4mb of ram and 500 mb hard drive will be just fine for any household surfing the web and buying stuff online. THe 499 dell you mention is overkill but I never suggest someone buy less if that is what they want.
You can buy any Windows 10 with 4mb of ram and a 500mb harddrive and will be fine.
Staples/OfficeMax?Office Depo has sales all the time and can pick up something just fine for $300. on sale.

my dell work laptop's monitor, or monitor connection STB before the 3 year depreciation was up. I haven't had a Dell laptop @ work without something breaking before 3 years.

I am 3 for 3.

Bought a ASUS F555LA from Amazon last week for my Mother. $349.99 + tax with free shipping. Arrived in 3 days.

Have not had it long obviously but so far seems well worth the price.

5th Gen Intel I3 CPU, 15.6" screen, 4 GB Ram, 500 GB HD, and Wireless AC. (Do not have a wireless AC router but it connected to the wireless N router with no issues and I figure my next router will likely be Wireless AC.)

did an impulse buy recently from Best Buy on an HP laptop for $260 -- 15.6" screen, AMD 2.0GHz quad-core processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD storage, DVD burner; I'm kinda 'stuck' with it after they refused to process the return...did too much 'buy, try, return' for their taste in 2015 with tablets & accessories; so far the HP is running well and will become the primary machine in my house as a replacement for an 8 year old Compaq desktop that has been upgraded to it's maximum capability (RAM, processor, video card)and has been repaired several times by a friend (including a new power supply, new video card, new hard drive);
