Hi

I thought just to switch topics away from the thin stuff for a thread.

Are there any 5W-50 users on BITOG ?

Where is Dr T.?

I tried Castrol Syntec 5w50 once in my Camaro, which normally runs 20w50 due to the high oil temps it sees at the race track. I noticed reduced oil pressure and a dramatic increase in oil consumption so I switched back. The oil consumption may have leveled off if I had stuck with it longer, but who knows.

not a very common vicosity for us in the US. Castrol at least used to sell it, not sure if they still do...

It was known to be used by folks with BMWs and Audis, especially. It is kind of an oddball viscosity, and IMO, folks that need something a bit more robust either stick with a 5w-40 HDEO or GC, or else go with a 15w40 or 20w50 conventional.

Im sure some will chime in with experiences.

They do. It's the only Motorcraft Full Syn I've been able to find online.

Both Castrol Syntec and Pennzoil Platinum 5w/50 are sold at my local indie parts house. I've seen the Castrol available almost everywhere around here, the Pennzoil not so much.

I used Castrol Syntec 5W50 from 1993 to about 2003 in my 1993 Dodge Shadow ES. The Shadow was equipped with the 3.0L V6 and 5 speed. When I sold it I had over 275000 miles on it and the engine was still running great. The car itself was falling apart but the powertrain had no issues. I changed the oil and filter about every 4000 miles.

Pennzoil Plat 5W50 is available closest to Australia is New Zealand, I spoke to Pennzoil and reckon due to marketing will not have it in Australia which i am not happy about. The 5W40 Pennz Plat is just too thin for some of us to use, especially in Holden and Ford 6's and 8's.

A good 5W50 to try is the Penrite Everyday Synthetic 5W50. It is a full Group 3 oil, SM/CF and has about 1040ppm of Zinc etc. Other additives i do not know. It is listed as Full SAPS for a SM rated oil. Also comes in 10W40 so good for alternating between the seasons. I am inclined to try is as it retails always for $50 max, $45 some places. Good consistent price for GRopu 3 in Oz, when everyone else is selling it around $70. Then again, Penrite sell their PAO oils for that much. Maybe their possible use of recycled base stock (not that its an issue) helps them lower the cost.

I've used it once in my 9-5. One of the only oils I've ever used that felt thick when hot when I drained it. Don't know what that means....

Someone somewhere is clearance-ing it, though, as I found a gallon at Big Lots recently for $15....

I was going to jump on that too, but I don't have any more cars that need that thick of a weight.

I'm using the syntec 5w5o in my 84 Volvo wagon. Runs good and less consumption than with the maxlife 10w40 I was using. Usually had to add a quart between changes. At 2500 miles into this run with no usage yet.

Hi,
I have used M1 5W-50 in a number of engine families over some years. IMHO it is a better lubricant than 15W-50 synthetics
but I prefer to use 5W-40 instead even here in the Tropics

M1 5W-50 is the only SAE50 lubricant on Porsche's Approval List - it has been this way since around 1999. It is used by some well known US Porsche twin turbo 911 engine builders - they bring it in via Canada

I used Castrol Syntec 5W-50 for about 8 years and 120,000KM (between 1994-2002) in a 75 hp 1988 Nissan Sentra. No problems of any kind. The car saw every kind of temps, from +40ºC to -40ºC. I was totally sold on the stuff and was convinced it was the best oil known to man. The Sentra came to grinding halt after the transmission gave up the ghost. I still have the engine and it's gleamy inside.

I used the same oil for approximately 115,000 km in my 1999 VW Passat 1.8T and ended up with sludge. So... I guess my glowing approval has ended up waning somewhat.

Back in 1997 I tried Castrol 5W-50 in my bought new 1996 Contour, which is spec'd for 5W-30. This was well pre BITOG days. It did reduce the "seat of the pants" power and reduced my mpg's. Went back to Mobil 1 5W-30 after 3 OCI's of the 5W-50 and noticed the car was peppier and my mileage was better by 4-5 mpg. The Contour continues to run happily with Schaeffer's Supreme Blend 5W-30.

Well, that pretty well covers it...

Is the M1 5W50 GroupIII+ or PAO based oil? Judging by the price, it doesn't seem to have the same based stock as 0W40.

I am not convinced that all M1 are PAO based. Refer to the M1 website:

Results of search M1

M1 5w30 does not have the same worded definition of based oil used, nor Supersyn Antiwear Tech as M1 5W50, 0W40...

Reading between "high performance fully synthetic" and "most advanced performance sythetic" leads me to believe that not all M1 have the same based oil.

The 1.8t was a sludge monster. I have that same motor and I got a recall letter some time ago about it. My brother works for BMW and alot former vw/audi owners chime in about it.
