Any 3.6L JL Wrangler owners here?

I have a 2019 Wrangler with the 3.6 that I completed an oil change on this week. I used the factory Mopar filter and Valvoline Restore and Protect 0w20. This is my first time trying the Valvoline. Previously I have used Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 and Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 along with Mopar filters.

I am tempted to go with 5w30 synthetic next oil change. Anyone else using 5w30 in the newer 3.6 Pentastar engines?

I have used Mobil 1, SGT, and Valvoline …
Switched to 30’s around 20k and sticking with it …
Used my last Fram Ultra and will keep an eye on changes …
Seems the Mobil 1 filters are starting to improve …

I’ve only had my Wrangler for a few weeks but my first change will be Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 with a Carquest Premium filter.

What oil and filter do you use? Thank you
I have run mostly Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20. I had a couple runs of Shell Rotella Gas Truck 0w20 because I got it for next to nothing. Then one run of Valvoline Extended Protection 0w20. But my mainstay is Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20. That´s also what I run in my Gladiator, since I bought it with 35k on it.

I also run mostly Fram Ultra oil filters. They filter extremely well and are held together well. I tore one apart after a 5k run and it took a pair of pliars and a pair of vice grips to pull the filter media apart due to the mesh backing (polymer or monofilament??) I did do some runs with Mobil 1 filters because I picked them up on clearance at Walmart for $2 or $3 a piece. They are fine, but there specs say they don´t filter as well as the Fram.

The JL has 103k miles on it now and the Gladiator has 56k. They run perfectly on the Mobil 1 and I do 5k oil changes. I did a couple runs up to 7500 or 8k on the JL and did used oil analysis´s and they came back with the oil in great shape.

Oh, I almost forgot....I did one 5k run of Mobil 1 ESP 0w20 for 5k in the JL. The used oil analysis was ok, but the wear metals were all higher than with the EP. So I went right back to EP.

My JL is a manual transmission. It has been off-road quite often, including rock crawling in the desert with temps above 100 degrees....1 to 5mph for hours on end with the AC running much of the time. I also have towed with it often (boat) and I run it like a sports car in the summer with the doors off.....The six speed manual is so much fun with this engine! It loves to rev! So my 3.6 spends time at both ends of the tachometer and everywhere in between. No issues. I am going to change the spark plugs, serpentine belt, and whatever pulleys can replace sometime this summer. But it still runs like new. I really doubt I will feel or hear any difference with the new plugs.

I really don´t know why everyone is scared of 0w20 in this engine, especially a high quality reputable oil. It does just fine.

Keep an eye on mine and you will see. I run it as hard as I do my Vette. And I don´t tow with my Vette.

My JK 3.8 went 195k before I sold it on mostly 5w20 with one or two runs of 0w40 and several of 0w20. It´s a 3.8, so no matter what, the oil consumption came and went again and again. The 0w40 made no difference. But it ran like new. The guy who bought it has about 220k on it and has been running Mobil 1 high mileage 5w20.

I had an old 2002 or 2003 Ford F150 with a 5.4. I sold it to a buddy. Nothin but Mobil 1 5w20. It is well past 300k now and the engine is in better shape than the body and frame. It towed a huge boat for a good bit of it´s life. No issue with the 20 weight in that thing, either.

0w20 doesn´t scare me and my two Pentastars run beautifully on it.

The Mobil 1 Extended Performance was reformulated and appears to have less PAO than it did before, but it still has a good shot of it....the same amount as in the ESP X2 version, which is a bit of a fad right now because.....of the PAO content. LOL.

Do you like the Mobil 1 filters? Reason I ask is I had a surprising situation happen during my latest oil change on my 3.6 JL Wrangler. When I removed the cap, the paper cartridge separated from the plastic center tube that snaps into the engine side. In essence the filter media came out with the cap. Other than coming loose from one end the media was not torn nor did it appear damaged. I simply grasped the plastic center tube and it came right out of the engine side of the housing.

My last oil change was done at a trusted mechanic and the housing did not feel over tightened. He normally uses factor filters unless you ask for something different.

Wish I had taken a picture to share.

Just a heads up. Mobil 1 has recently changed filter manufacturers. No longer made by M+H! This is a much welcomed change with the QC problems. The shelves do still have a mix until the old inventory runs out.

I haven´t had any issue. They do the Pentastar twist sometimes, but not badly. I´ve not had one tear. I have run 10 of them, I think, mostly 5k each with one or two going 7k. Sounds like you had one that was defective rather than design related.

That´s what I love about the cartridge filters....you can see if they had a problem.

I think I still have 1 or 2 Mobil 1 filters left.

One thing I did see in the UOA´s....The insolubles measurement was always 0.1% with the Fram Ultras and 0.2 or 0.3 with the Mobil 1´s. I don´t think that is enough to matter, but my interpretation is that this consistency shows the better filtration of the Fram.

So the "Pentastar twist" is something that happens at times? Which Fram filters have you had good results with?

Pentastar twist looks like the oil filter had someone twist, or wring it, from both ends like a wash rag. It´s normal, common, and causes no issues. But it bugs you, for sure, to see it! LOL. The Frams do it more than the Mopar or Mobil 1, in my experience. But again, the data in the used oil analysis shows the best filtration with the Fram.

I have only run the Ultra. Never tried an Extra Guard or a Tough Guard. I´d say the original Mopar twisted the least, but it still had a little.

I´ll post a pic of the next one. I´m coming up on an oil change in both my Jeeps. They both do it exactly the same, btw. Lol.
