Bait, in the form of ant traps. Make sure there are no crumbs around so their only food source will be the bait.

Ants are bad. It seems like they'll come into your kitchen even when there's not a speck of crumbs anywhere to draw them. You really can have a spotless kitchen and the ants will still come in. I guess if you wash your dishes and wipe up the floor right after every time you eat they might stop coming in, but dang...

Maybe you could find the ant mound and use insecticide on it. The problem is there could be many ant mounds in other's property. Home improvement stores sell bags of ant insecticide powder
that you can spread around your entire house outside parameter and it seems to stop them eventually.

take your mortar and pestle, and grind together 1tsp of dry yeast, and 1 tspn white sugar into a fine powder...mix into 1tspn honey, to make a paste.

Place drops (around 1/2") onto some flat al foil where they will definitely come across it.

You'll have heaps of ants come in to get the sugar yeast mixture, wander away, and it will start to ferment, killing them, but back in their hole.

You want to attract the ants to something poisonous that they take back to their nest where it will kill the queen.

Home Depot has them. I forgot what they are called but they are small white plastic things that cost very little.

Put them where you know the ants are, inside and out.

It'll take some time, but it's better than using something like Ortho Home Defense because that won't get rid of the source of the issue.

Once the ant issue is dealt with using the method I described, then you can use Ortho Home Defense.

PS: Shannow has recommended the exact same method.

A boric acid based ant trap will kill them deader than anything. Terro brand ant traps with borate have worked well for me. They're spendy at about $1 apiece, but work very well.

Shannow, I'll have to try the sugar/yeast formula later this summer. That sounds effective!

I live in an apartment complex, so I do not know how much external spraying is realistic.

I like the idea of the traps from HD. Do any brand work better than others?

Are there more effective methods than traps?

Thanks.

Those traps are the best as once it works, the problem goes away (in that location).

Use them outside as well and you'll get even longer lasting results and won't have to wait until they are inside in future.

Once you've solved the inside issue, then using the outside with Ortho Home Defense will help maintain the situation.

Terro is by far the best, from my experience. The pre-baited traps usually are filled with poison peanut butter, but I've had trouble getting the ants to eat the poison.

The ants start eating the Terro the second they find it.

Ortho Home Defense can be used indoors or outdoors and is pretty effective as a general purpose pest control. You probably will have to respray and you will need to be thorough with the initial application for it to be effective, but it will help curb pest problems. It doesn't have a strong smell or fumes and unlike a bug bomb you control what it comes in contact with. Obviously being a poison it's toxic, but it can be used safely indoors.

I can't stand ants. I guess they are not as bad as roaches, but they are still a nuisance. I have been noticing BIG ones this year.

+1. The have new little pastic traps for the terro that works awesome. You'll have a solid lIne of ants but they take the poison back to the queen and they're gone in a few days at most.

Terro is what I use. You want them to take be bait back to where they live.

Ortho home defence is a great multipurpose pest control spray and Terro is specific control for ants. Terro will destroy the colony. Use the Terro for the ants you have (you will quit using it when they are gone) and use the Ortho for maintenance control if you wish.
