I just purchased this van a few weeks ago. I have been working through a few cosmetic items and decided to pull a oil sample to send in even though it looked fine from a visual. You know it isn't good when the oil lab calls and tells you to dump your oil now...

Here is the report:

Code:
copper 25 Silicon 20

iron 79 Sodium- 452

chrom------2 Potassium 1032

alum------11

lead------26 Visc 10.23 Oxidation 0 Nitration 29

This is on a GM 3.4L with 135k miles that had good records and maintainance history since new. The original intake manifold gaskets were replaced at 36k miles by dealer. Again at 86k miles by independant garage (using the "new redesigned" GM gaskets set) and now it looks like it will be time to do the job again. Seems 50k is about all one can get with the GM manifold gaskets - Dexcool antifreeze had been changed and the level kept full over the years but I will switch to something else now - perhaps Zerex G05.

Of course I am now trying to nail down how the coolant is leaking into the engine oil. I did a pressure test of the system and it repeatedly drops from 15 lbs back to about 7 lbs within minute or two. It will not hold pressure above the 7 lbs.

Doesn't that basically confirm another intake manifold gasket leak so can I rule out a problem with the head gaskets?

I will try and do the repairs myself unless it something beyond the intake manifold gaskets.

The van runs fine with no engine issues other than this antifreeze leak and even though the wear metal numbers are high I hope they will come back down once I get the coolant out of the oil.

[/code]

I've heard the Fel-Pro gaskets is the way to go for this engine as well. GM makes a metal framed gasket for the 3.8L but not the 60 deg. engines.

Considering the Pot. and Sod. levels it really doesn't look that bad. I've seen worse wear levels with coolant leaks.

Good luck.

Try to tighten the manifold mounting bolts as per the manuel its funny but checking the bolts on all the 3.4 and 3.1 is a standard procedure i use on every one of them that comes into my shop about 30% have loose bolts on my wifes 3.1 one bolt was almost completly out.

WHAT??????????? Those numbers are through the roof! 1032 ppm potassium? Won't hold pressure above 7 psi? That's major. Many times these motors will hold 15 psi but will show 100 - 200 ppm potassium and positive for glycol.

I wouldn't even drive this thing until you get it fixed. Might want to get professional diagnosis to rule out a head gasket, then, like mentioned above, get the Fel Pro problem solvers in there and call it a day.

Is it losing like a pint of coolant every couple weeks???

My mom has that 3.4 in a Rendesvous. Needless to say, it is a mean little engine. It needed both the intake and head gaskets replaced. Big job to get down that far. Not impressed at all with that engine.

Well, I think that it's remarkable that the elementals are so low considering the obvious levels of coolant in the oil.

It's one of those, "I think we have to define "completely destroyed" before I could comment" type things.

I have just driven the van about 500 miles - with 400 of those in one drive across MO to get home. I was watching the coolant level and temp. gauge and didn't notice anything unusual. I do want to emphasize to other readers that the oil, oil cap and dipstick all look normal. Looking at the used oil today you will see no signs of any coolant/antifreeze contamination.

My plans are to drive it no more than about 500 miles over the next month while I gather my parts and a few new tools and install the new Felpro intake gaskets in September (after daytime temps drop back down a bit). Will do the plugs, wires, and thermostat.

I am looking into purchasing a block combustion gas kit to check for evidence of a bad head gasket. It has some type of fluid that changes color if it senses combustion gases in the radiator. Anyone used one of these test before? I think I would just junk this van now if it has both head gasket and intake manifold gasket problems. I am betting it is just the intake manifold gasket - but I have already lost my first bet when I believed the van didn't have an issue with an internal coolant leak.

they still put these engines in the equinox and torrent SUVs I know for sure. these engines are now made in China.

I didn't mean it wasn't a serious problem that shouldn't be fixed or that it wasn't a bad leak. I meant the wear elements could have been much worse considering how bad the coolant contamination is.

The new ones are totally leak free from what I've seen.

And we wonder why GM is going downhill at a rate only slightly less than a bowling ball being dropped from an aircraft........

Don't rule out head gaskets. I've seen lots of them develop a crack between the water jacket and intake valley. Unless you see an obvious intake failure it isn't much more work to pull the heads.
The 'fix' in the newer engines was to reroute the coolant externally from one head to the other totally bypassing the intake.
Gotta hand it to GM. 20+ years and they're still working the bugs out of this design.

Just has the Intake warrantied on my own 3.4L...

That makes sense... blame the Chinese for the garbage that Americans built.
