I have been using Avira Anti Vir as an antivirus program. I recently uninstalled to start using AVG but it didnt completly uninstall. I went to Add/Remove programs in the control panel to uninstall it, and it uninstalled just fine I thought. Security center didnt recognize it and it is not present in program files folder on C drive. I installed AVG and restarted. Now security center is telling me that two antivirus programs are present. It dosent list one or the other, but just tells me that at least one is up to date. Still no trace of Avira in program files. What would I have to do to totally remove it? I would also like to go with AVG on my laptop, but want to totally remove Avira first. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I tried C Cleaner, no dice. I also downloaded the registry cleaner and windows still tells me that two anti virus programs are found. I guess a reformat will be in order here shortly.

Do you have any antispyware programs running in real time? I have Antivir and Superantispyware running together, and my security center also indicates two antiviruses running together.

Why go from Antivir to AVG? Antivir is currently one of the, if not the best antivirus available, especially in Trojan detection? It far and away has the best heuristics now.

Don't reformat, go into the registry and delete known Antivir locations. Click start, run, and type regedit.

Then go to HKEY\local machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\setup and look for any Avira or Antivir stuff; delete it.

Then, go to HKEY\localmachine\software and do the same

Then, go to HKEYcurrentuser\software and do the same.

Also, look in your program files folder and delete any Avira or Antivir folders.

Don't delete anything else out of the registry though and be careful!

I am seroiusly thinking about reformatting. I went to the registry Drew, and ran a registry cleaner several times and still no dice. I do run Spyware doctor but it dosent show up as a different scan. Nor did it show up seperately before I decided to install AVG.

In a year of running avg at every startup and email download it's never found anything. The other programs I've ran in the past always picked on on something from time to time. Not so sure about it myself. I also have spybot and superantispyware, I'll run both and one always finds stuff the other didn't. Not so sure about those programs either. Also seems like all these security programs have caused my system more problems than any of the stuff they are supposed to protect me from.

I tried just about everything, I did a system restore, and that didnt cut it, it just did away with AVG. Being that Avira was already "restored" I decided to keep it and do away with AVG, so into regedit I went and deleted anything with AVG or Grisoft in it. No dice still. I ran C Cleaner registry cleaner and still am coming up with the same result. It dosent seem to be adversely affecting the way the PC performs or anything so I think I will just leave it be for now until it either screws up or I feel like pizzing around with a reformat. Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys.

I know it is not a good thing to run two A/Vs. I just dont have the time right now to mess with a reformat. Will it cause any security breaches of problems in lets say.....a weeks time running it like this? It seems to be running fine and has been doing okay.
