anti-drainback

I have an '03 Tacoma w/ 2.4l 4 cyl., the filter is mounted vertically, open-end up. Does anyone know if the filter system will still siphon down during an off period; and does a fram regular filter have an anti-drainback valve?

...Lucky you!! The filter on my 98 Tacoma V6 isn't, and it is a pain to get at. I don't think any oil can escape a filter in the upright position but I am not sure if they leave the anti-drainback feature out of a filter that mounts in that fashion.

Guys,

I see very few filters that do not have ADBVs any more. In fact, if your filter is used in more applications than just your Tacoma (and so may be mounted vertically or horizontally on various other motors) I can almost guarantee you it has one. If you have a filter handy, look at the smaller holes surrounding the large threaded mounting hole and if there is black or orange "rubber" on the internal side of the holes, you have an ADBV. Just to ensure you understand, the ADBV is there to keep oil from draining out of the filter on horizontal mounts, not to keep it from draining back into the filter. The ADBV opens to the inside to let oil into the filter but not out. (Hope this doesn't sound patronizing...it is not meant to be.)

I havn't looked at the Tacoma V6 lately but my 4 cyl oil filter would be impossible to get to if it wasn't for the removable plate in the right fender well. Remove the plate and reach right in to the filter. Is there a similar plate on your truck?
