Anti drain back valve came apart

Is that a white silicone rubber ADBV on the new filter? Or some kind of white felt material ... photo is washed out pretty good.

How long has that failed filter been in the engine. Doubt it was the oil's fault.
It's a white rubber or plastic seal of some sort, cross-section is a U shape.

Chris142: "I don't see a name on the old filter."

Probably a weird, junky filter from China or who knows. Hence, that seal hardening and going haywire.

Most brands of this exact application have plastic end caps. The old filter has a resin end cap, same as Mann, Champ/Luber-Finer, and Beck-Arnley. But those typically have name and part number in big digits on the resin end cap, whereas this old filter does not. I say a weirdo, off-brand junk filter that doesn't correspond to any photos on Rock Auto, which explains the seal failure. Or small possibility it's a Beck-Arnley.

The RockAuto filter linked earlier of the new filter in post 1 looks like an ADBV (similar shape), but I believe it's a seal too. The ADBV in a cartridge filter setup are in the filter housing if there is one.

Here is what a real Mann filter should look like. The ADBV is silicone, not plastic. The tan colored one was in use for one year, but not brittle in any way. Still very pliable.

And yes, that's my recently replaced filter spread out behind it. That's a story for another day though.

He didn’t show the label side of the new filter. The bad filter shown seems to have no name, but maybe it came off. It can be aftermarket not counterfeit.

I had studied that damaged filter for a while and kept thinking that the entire filter, but mainly the white silicone ADBV and also resin end cap, were STAINED exceptionally dark. But I dismissed that idea. Now JohhnyG's pic @ 1 year confirms the staining. So it's possible the damaged filter was VERY old. For what it's worth, the resin end caps appear to start off yellow but typically end up chocolate brown. Used HU7116Z filters still have their part # markings clearly visible, and the damaged filter has no markings, so perhaps it's both causes...a very old, junky no-name filter.
