Anti Drain Back question.

Should vertical mounted filters have anti drain back valves?

Does this valve keep the oil passage above the filter filled after shut down?

Anyone know of a diagram or cut away drawing that will help me understand how this works.

Engines in question were Chevy 350 cid and Ford 7.3 PSD.

Yes, I thought they didn't before I came to this site as well as LS1.com. A vertical mount filter will keep the filter full of oil, but with an antidrainback valve you will also be holding oil up in the oil gallies above the filter so it will oil up the top end faster upon startup.

My 2003 E-250 w/ the 5.4L V8 has a vertical mount oil filter (Motorcraft FL-820-S) with an anti-drain back valve.

When I remove the filter I get about a quart of oil coming out of the adapter.

OK,so I should I be finding it when I open up the filters. Anywhere I can find an discription of an anti drain back valve, maybe one with pictures.

i'm not an expert but I think the anti-drain back valve is on almost every oil filter. If you see a rubber "valve" behind the inlet holes, its got the ADB valve.

There are a lot of oil filters out there without ADBVs on them actually, the AC Delco PF25 for one (the OEM filter for my car, although I use the larger ones with ADBVs in them) and the AC Delco PF58 and PF35 as well.

Although it's getting more rare to see applications calling for non ADBV filters. GM has started recommending PF1218s in place of the PF35s (same filter but the 1218 has the ADBV) and there is a new filter to replace the PF25 too. They also recommend the PF59 in applications that used to call for PF58s. (59 is same as 58 but with ADBV)

So even GM realizes the importance of the ADBV even on a vertical mount.

ADBV's are found on all of the filters I've used for these engines:

Ford 300 CID I6, 302 V8/5.0/5.8, 4.6L SOHC V8, 5.4L SOHC V8

ChryCorp 2.5L I4

Maybe so, IMHO the fact that they have one less part number and a reduced inventory plays even more

I will take anytime a vertical mounted filter over an horizontal one even with the best ADBV.

You can fill it to the top when you install it.
And it stays full when you shut down the engine, unless you roll over

but thats a different story

There are still some without the valve. It's the rubber you see throught the multiple inlet holes. A Silverado came in a few weeks ago where the previous oil change shop had used one of these filters in a horizontal position. Engine made lots of noise on startup.
