Any ideas how to reduce or eliminate ant infestations? When the weather gets hot, ants seems to be more aggressive. I've used these baits with limited success in the past.

Every time I had ants in the house, I examined the outer perimeter of my house. There was always a nest under a landscape rock. I treated chemically or dumped boiling water on the nest. That destroyed the nest and that always ended the inside infestation of ants.

The Terro liquid works on their gathering spot inside as the scouts will take the bait back to the queen. You have to resist the urge to kill them and let them have access to the bait.

A thorough perimeter treatment with Termidor SC, even at the low concentration, is incredibly effective. The key is to treat the entire foundation perimeter of the home and not miss ANY areas, so that may sometimes mean moving yard debris.

This website sells professional grade products that the pros use. Read the guides and the reviews on the product and and go from there. I effectively knocked out hundreds of fire ant hills in my yard and now have zero fire ants. Also learned how to spray my house quarterly for spiders and roaches and other bugs and have a nice bug free house now.

The Terro Liquid Ant Bait Stations have worked amazingly well for us. Just cut the end off the clear plastic station, place it where the ants are entering your home, watch them congregate inside the station, lapping the stuff up and taking it back to their colony, and a couple of weeks later, THEY GONE for the rest of the summer.

This is the stuff:

We get it at Walmart every spring when ants first start invading our kitchen and it keeps them away til the following spring.

I use this product all around the house and rocks and it works great. I use it every 2 to 3 months and I previously paid $40 per treatment 4 times per year and it only costs about $12-$14 to treat the exterior area of the house. I can do the whole home in about 20 minutes. Just hook it on the garden hose, turn on the on/off valve and spray to your hearts desire.

Agree ^^^ professional grade products.
Concentrations are much greater per container than consumer stuff which means that you use far less solution when mixing with water so cost per application isn’t as expensive as you might think.

These are two I am using now, the small container I use as a special use recently for Aphids in Crypt Myrtle trees since it treats the base of the tree, the tree takes it up through the roots and kills them when they feed on the tree. The mix is only .6 oz per gallon of water. ( 6 tenths of an ounce)

The other large I use for perimeter spray, lawn insects and mosquitos once a month.

Both can also be used for termite barrier.
The mentioned Termidor SC is another well known and very respected that I will switch two in a couple years. Meaning over a long period of time some insects will build resistance. Most likely the stuff you buy in stores first since they are widely used.

Get yourself an Ortho 2 gallon sprayer and some gloves.
Yes if this is going to be a one off thing the big box stores sell the stuff with same active ingredients however it is much less concentrated so you use more.

Most people get pest control companies I have always done my own in every house. Never had termites and never carried a termite bond. Only recently after decades did I start using “do my own” I always bought consumer products in stores.
Some of it is the same ingredient just less concentrated so you use more in the mix.

Treat all chemicals with respect and follow directions.

I've used this with good results. Like Lubener said, you have to resist the urge to kill the little buggers since the point is to get as many of them as possible to take the stuff back to the nest.

Any liquid product with deltamethrin as it's active ingredient has always worked for me with ants. My wife has bought the terro junk and it's never done anything but occupy space IMO.

my routine in south texas to stay ant free.

I spray the outside foundation of the house and windows and doors with bifenthrin (generic, amazon). About one ounce of product per gallon in a pump sprayer, every 4-6 weeks.

Granular bifenthrin in the lawn a few times a year.

Baits work great for those occasions when the ants get inside the house. Spraying killer solution inside, has been ineffective for me. I use both Terro and Bayer Maxforce Quantum baits. Sometimes the ants go for one, and other times it's the other. Between the two, though, it gets them.

To prevent infestation, spraying around the house is critical. I've had reasonable success with Ortho Home Defense. There may be better, though.

Everything on the ant front was calm, until it wasn't!

First they showed up in the bathroom. Just some scouts. Then gone.

First wave, on the kitchen counter top. They seemed to be coming out of the walls, particularly, where the washing machine drain comes out. Sprayed the heck out of the area with Ortho Home Defense, then they were gone. For two days...

Next wave, on the kitchen floor. To be honest, I'm behind in my housekeeping, and the floor was dirty.

More Home Defense...

Went around the outside periphery of the house with the spray. Bushes in the front of the house were overgrown, difficult to reach the ground with the spray, so tore them all OUT! In truth, neglected maintenance, but no more! Just got done spraying the heck out of the front. Just one small area around the patio and a planter in the back is yet remaining!

I've got two different types of baits, in shake bottles. Thinking I'll throw them down around the house also. No doubt, overkill! But what's the downside?

First, baits are either sugar based or protein based. Ants will take one or the other, depending on what they want to feed on at the moment. So the pros will put down two different types of baits to see what the ants want at that time.

And most sprays (not all, but most) are repellents. You do not mix repellants with baits. Its counterproductive.

Thanks for that article. Good information.

I discovered the need for two types of bait the hard way. One particular time the ants were pretty bad, but I just let them roam and take the bait home. One morning, they were all gone.

I sprayed the front of the house today, and ordered some yard bug killer. When messing with the sprinkler heads today, ants were everywhere in the yard. Pretty sure this is the reservoir of ants giving me fits.
