Another win (C&D) for the Mazda 6 :)

Nice. Much better looking car too. Honda and Toyota have become so boring. Awful designs. They need to step up their game.

I'm glad they like it, they probably won't ever have to turn a rusty bolt.

Looks are 100% subjective as well, I think it looks bad, like all Mazdas.. While the Accord is drop dead gorgeous. The sedan is so mint looking.

Looks certainly are subjective, but The Mazda 6 was in the last 3 finalists of world car design awards with Aston Martin and Jaguar this yr (which the Aston won). That says something about its looks in general, I think.

I personally think the 6 looks so much better than the Accord, which looks just 'blah';
When it comes to looks, the gap is so huge between the 6 and almost all other mid-sizers in same price class.

(Just for the record, i thought this WAYYY before we had even started thinking seriously about the 6 - we've never owned a Mzda before, either)

I agree - it goes from sporty-good-looks [6] to yawn [competitors].

I prefer the look of the new Accord to the new 6, but as everyone has already mentioned, looks are subjective. I have a suspicion that the Accords styling will age better than the Mazda.

Rust alone would keep me from buying a Mazda until I see them clean up their act, unless I moved south.

Class-leading performance, engaging character.... It's been that way since the 6 was introduced.

If they bring back the hatchback, I'm going to have a car payment again.

I can take pictures of the underside of my 8 year old Mazda. There is no rust.

Now all it needs is @400 bhp and rear-biased AWD.

That said, if I was shopping that segment I would definitely go with the 6. Too bad you can't get three pedals("peddles" for those of you from mazdas247.com) with the Grand Touring trim...

Mazda looks great. It looks great and performs even better.

I hope they have overcome their rust propensity. Every late model car in our company parking lot which has rust just happens to be a Mazda :-( Here is exhibit A

I like the way you think!

I like the Mazda 6's styling and the Honda Accord's styling, but for very different reasons.

The 6 has a lot of emotion in it; very organic. I do hope it will age well. Sometimes these styling "movements" (I don't want to call them fads) don't stay in vogue for a long time. I look at the current Hyundai Sonata as an example; it was status-quo-busting back when it came out in a few years ago. But that design almost looks more dated today than its competitors from that era.

On the other end of the spectrum, the new Accord's styling is very mature, and very classy to me. It's not flamboyant; it's not looking for attention. It has a very clean-cut and trimmed look to me. These types of designs tend to age well. Accords from the mid-to-late 1990s still look sharp, and are desirable used cars for many people.

I like both cars (a lot) for different reasons.

The real test is to compare the cars when they are 5 years old with 100k on them. Hopefully Mazda has caught up with Honda in long term durability as well. I think Mazda let this slide a bit in last decade in the 3 and the 6 and in the used market, there is a quite a few more rough looking ones compared to say Honda or Toyota in my observation.

Regarding styling comments:

My take is that the Honda Accord and Camry have been making their cars more and more conservative looking just to get the same group of people to buy them that don't want their family car to offend anyone, at any point in time, for any reason.

The cars are completely anonymous looking out on the road, and the vast majority of the US Driving Populous wouldn't be able to tell one from the other if they needed to describe the vehicle to the police, if it wasn't for the big badge on the trunk and hood of the cars.

Some people thrive on having a car that looks like nothing, and don't stand out in the crowd. For them, there's a lot of choices.

For the people who want a car to look as great as it drives, there's the Mazda 6, and soon, the new Mazda 3, and a little bit longer, the new Miata. Mazda doesn't build cars for the people who just want a bland driving appliance, they want people who want their cars behind the wheel, and being advocates for the brand, like the new Mazda converts we have here on this forum, for example.

How many of you are as enthusiastic about your Camry's and Malibu's as we are about our Mazda 6's, and CX-5's? Pretty much none.

I'm as enthusiastic about my CUV as any CX-5 owner, I promise you. It's not the vehicle itself; it's how much the owner likes the vehicle.

If you look at the scores given by C&D in this comparison, the differences between the Honda and the Mazda are not that dramatic. In fact, the differences between the "powertrain" and the "chassis" sections were only one point each. Much of the difference in the "vehicle" section came from subjective areas like driver comfort, ergonomics, and interior and exterior styling. And I respect that; that's C&D's opinion and they're certainly entitled to it. But the scores on the vehicle performance metrics were not that far apart. In fact, numerically, the "powertrain" and "chassis" scores didn't differ but by 1 or 2%.

Both of these top-scoring cars are extremely close in performance. Buy what you like and enjoy it.

Both are great cars and I hope both of them turn out to be durable and reliable when 2020 rolls around. Honda had few duds in the past which only reared its ugly head only after some years aka V6 transmissions, dark blue paint etc.

It would be nice to be able to use some scientific techniques to predict how they would fare at 10 year mark. Otherwise we just have to wait and see.
