Hi:
one of my yahoo e-mail accounts keeps getting hacked and sends e mails from my contact list with links to various ads, etc. MSE, spy bot SD, AVG, Vipre, MalWareBytes, CC Cleaner, latest Firefox 10? w/Better Privacy, software firewall, I think hardware firewall on Gateway, XP SP3, everything latest versions I believe, Belarc Advisor shows all security patches up to date, rerun av software often, Malwarebytes found 2 trojans+1 other on ONE time and it really helped for 3 days but came back although less stuff sent (all 5-10am per Yahoo), hardwired link to router although wireless is on (plan to pull antenna) no laptops, public hotspots, flash drives, limited number of e-mail and web sites, no porno downloads, just amazon, bring a trailer, BITOG, Reason mag, Discover, Wired, some others, no really unusual stuff. Really need to clean out. Any thoughts?

Have you changed the password on that Yahoo account?

These Yahoo account hacks are becoming popular, it has happened to a few contacts of mine. In one case the rogue even used instant messaging to trick contacts into opening malicious sites. The consequences can be bad because the recipients of these emails trust you so they are less careful with the links.

change it to something with upper case, lower case, numbers and a special character such as an ampersand or an exclamation point.

I had the same problems no matter what was done.

Switched to the Free GMX Email and never looked back.

You can access it by using a web browser or setup it in your favorite email program as either an IMAP or POP3 account.

I recommend that with an email program that you use the IMAP account.

Have used GMX for years. Just do a search for it.

Did you by any chance respond to a fishing email ostensibly from Yahoo, saying they had to see what accounts were still being used, but which was actually soliciting your password?

This happened to me just yesterday on my Hotmail account. Hundreds of spam emails were sent to people in my address book. Strangely, it wasn't just my Hotmail contact list but my global contact list, so I'm thinking that the hack somehow pulled addresses from my mail client personal address book (Mozilla Thunderbird) that had addresses of contacts from Gmail and some of my other email accounts.

I ran a bunch of anti-virus and malware scans, but didn't really come up with anything serious. Microsoft suspended my Hotmail account - good thing I guess. I unlocked it and changed the password. Let's see what happens now. But I am very concerned, especially about the fact that the hacker was able to access my global contact list, not just Hotmail, even though it was the Hotmail account that was used to actually send the spam messages.

they hacked my gf's gmail account by hacking her old unused hotmail account and sending her password reset to it.

That sounds personal.........

That was likely a script (and a well written one from the sounds of it) to at least find and compromise the account. However using the password reset procedure likely required some manual intervention. That's a bit scary.

i got my hotmail compromised once by what I think was an XSS script on IE when I was on Vista. Now, I don't normally use IE and I didn't care much for my Vista install. So I changed the password and reformatted my hard drive, problem solved

I have two friends who's Yahoo accounts have been hacked. Both also had the same basic message stating that they were out of the country and needed money to get back home.

My daughter's Hotmail account was recently hacked...just in the past few weeks.

I don't use a Yahoo or Hotmail account anymore...haven't in years and rely on my internet provider email account.

That happened with one of my Yahoo accounts also.

malwarebytes was the only scan that - 1 time - showed trojans. I don't know about a root kit with certainty. I did change passwords on TWO accounts that got hacked with similar yahoo names, and repeatedly cleaned w/malwbytes and mse and spybot and cc cleaner and avg and vipre and there was no sending for the last 3 days. The last few outbound spams never came back w/a mailer daemon unable to deliver which suggests a smaller outbound list. Wonder how it knew to reduce the outbound list? The original attempts were all between 5-10 am yahoo time and higher volume than the later ones. I am still checking to see if this is permanent. I went to Gibson Research and they checked the ports and rated it highly, finding no obvious flaws.

per Gibson Research I have and had high strength passwords and I don't think social engineering is involved, although someone who knows me well might be able to guess a link. just checked today and nothing new sent out so far.
