I have a set of ear muffs that became loose where they ear muffs mount to the head set.

I had an old tube of Ultra Black. Once cured it stays flexible. Unfortunately it sets up in the nozzle after time but a 7/32 drill bit can be used to drill it out and get to the good stuff. I wiped the nubbins of the ear muffs with 70% alcohol and put a dab of Ultra Black on. I let it cure for two days then snapped the ear muffs into the head set. They still allow movemet to fit perfectly.

I use Permatex Ultra Black RTV on everything, especially on anything black.
After I buy a tube of RTV and use it for the job that I bought it for, it’ll only get hard in the tube if not used up in reasonable time(months).

Yes left over contents will dry out and harden. It is not as bad as the cans of expanding foam for sealing cracks/holes. You only get one use of a can. You can not store it and use the remaining at a later date.
