I still like the idea of hearing-ear dogs. You could tune the hybrids to emit a high-frequency sound that only the trained dogs would hear. Then it wouldn't bother the rest of us and still keep the vulnerable, cross-walking, jay-walking blind people safe.

I think perhaps that's why I was put on this earth.
Maybe a digital recording of a horse drawn carriage on a cobblestone road could be synchronized to the wheel speed sensors.
Thanks, but I think I like the Jetson's car sound idea better. More in keeping with the spirit of the futuristic technology. Besides, I can see myself running over some halfwit who steps out in front of me, all absorbed in the task of craning his head around looking for the horse and buggy that will never hit him. . .
Well, EK, you can be concerned about the silence of your Prius, but it's still a requirement to be careful out on the street. A bus is pretty loud, right? So, I'm downtown in DC last week, 17th/Conn Ave NW, a busy area. I got a laptop slung over one shoulder, bag of PC parts over the other, it's raining, the street is noisy anyway (when you're in the city everything is white noise, right?) and I'm in a hurry. So I approach the curb to do a little jaywalking, and for no particular reason decided, a half step from the street, to go down to the corner to cross. At that second, a Metrobus comes down the curb lane an inch off the curb at probably 40MPH. In the city. And you couldn't even distinguish the thing, noise-wise, from the background noise. We have a LOT of peeps hit by busses around here, so it isn't just your prius. Lucky I was. It would have been my own stupidity, trust me. You have to pay attention. You'da thought 5 years dancing on flight decks, the rules sink into my thick skull, eh?
With all THAT said, who says we can safeguard the blind, the deaf and the mentally-challenged if we can't even safeguard the inattentive/stupid/careless (ok, ok, such as myself for example)? I don't mean to be un-PC, but without vision, hearing, and good analytical skills, isn't going out on the street at ALL as dumb as if I, with 20/15 vision, good hearing, but too stupid to look both ways, step off the curb into the path of a bus?
No offense to the blind or deaf, but the rest of the world can't be all that concerned assuming the rules are being followed. That goes for the bus driver OR you in your silent Prius. And the rule is, look both ways, right? Well, if you can't look, and the pooch ain't smart enough, well, what's a Prius driver to do?

EKPOLK, We certainly have disagreed in the past but perhaps we can agree that these poor blind people need legal counsel to protect them from the evil car makers that have secretly and willfully(with malice)designed these hybrids to intentionally inflict injury as well as pain and suffering on the non-seeing community. Someone must rise up to defend these poor visually-impaired victims of a cruel capitalistic monster.
Now,imagine if you hit one of these people driving your hybrid and they took you to the cleaners. Man,thats alot to think about.

Well, I've been pretty zealous defending my lawyer colleagues, but hey, we certainly have a few bad apples, no doubt about that. That said, even I will be surprised if there's some class action opportunist who's brazen enough to take on this "issue".
Actually, FYI, I have run a fill of Mobil 1 Extended Performance in my Prius (right after I bought the car last summer, used oil analysis posted). I chose it specifically because it was about the very thinnest of the then-available xw-30 M1s. It ran well enough and the used oil analysis result looked fine. No problems with its performance. I'd better stop there. . .

Trouble is, so far, PP and GC have made my car even more silent!
The blind can't hear the cars ? What about the people that are deaf . People need some thing important to worry about.
