This is getting a little ridiculous now. I just through on P1s on all the cars (went on an oil change marathon at my parent's place).

Paranoia or not, I'm in the process of sending all the P1s I bought back and replaced them with Ultras. As for the P1s on the vehicles now, I may just swap the filters out at 3-4k and inspect them afterwards.

Not good Purolator. And I agree, if you have a tear, contact Purolator. Give them the opportunity to identify & fix the issue, even if you don't plan on using them for however long.

Sounds like Fram better step up production of the Ultra.

Why? Are they made by Purolator?

Seeing as how Mopar filters are made by Purolator, has anyone experienced Mopar filter issues?

I feel better running an STP filter than I do a Purolator. I can inspect the pleat spacing in an e-core before I buy it, and there are far fewer documented media failures in e-cores. In fact e-core media rarely even looks wavy after a few thousand miles of service.
I'll pay $3.59 for an STP at Autozone before I'll pay $3.29 for a Purolator Classic at Walmart.

^^^ Here's the "CATCH 22".

Purolator (or any other filter maker) is not going to warranty the filter if it's been cut open by the customer. And how are you gonna see if there is anything wrong inside, like torn media, without cutting it open.

Better ask Superman to look inside with his X-ray vision.

I'm worried, Purolator was one of our last readily available quality filter makers, Who will we turn to now?

I suggest that EVERYONE who finds a defective one, Calls and gets a return
kit, and sends it back. It's the only way to get there attention.

The AMSOIL filters are readily available (you can easily order them) and are quality (wire backed synthetic media), as are the FRAM ULtra filters.

I'm rockin' a stock Motorcraft on the Expedition, the BMW doesn't have to deal with this problem, it gets OEM or MANN, and they are cartridge style.

What I the best low price alternative? Motorcraft is Purolator also so I'm thinking that's a no no.

Motorcraft's that have been cut open have not had a torn media problem.

They just pop end caps instead

, but that's too bad of a failure.

"AIR" Filter

I'm probably just gonna order a OEM MC one, and send the PureONE back to them in the return kit they sent.

Yup, it's a shame that a filter manufacturer I thought was decent, using metal endcaps and getting better reviews than frams here in 2009, are all turning up to be a nightmare.

I agree in part with your point, however the end result is quite different. Blown media in an ecore can result in serious engine damage (the man at the desk next to me as I type this had it happen to him). With a torn Puro, you are just getting less filtration than you signed up for.

As far as the OP's torn P1, this is getting to be way too common. I'm guessing more people are looking now as we're consistently seeing the problem, but this must have happened to countless thousands of filters that were never opened judging by the amount of tears we are seeing here.

FWIW since its been mentioned, I've yet to see torn media on a Puro made Motorcraft and I believe the Motorcraft media is different than the Classics as its been tested at lower efficiency than the Classic.

Can people who find torn media in Purolator filters also post the manufacturing date code stamped on the can? Might help get a handle on if these are on older stock or newer stock.

Thank You
