Another Polar Vortex on its way

I definitely snowed. Not more than what I remember as a kid growing up in Calgary. It's -15C on the thermometer right now so "polar vortex" seems sensational. It just looks like normal winter out there.

I take it you’re talking about a snow event more than 40 years ago when you were a kid growing up in Calgary. I don’t think a polar vortex is anything sensational and was not meant to be. However, it is a weather phenomenon which will dump a lot of cold air into the USA on a short notice.

Edit. I sense some folks might think I’m trying to make a case for climate change.
I assure you I’m not. I’m just having fun telling folks to bundle up!

Normal day? You’ll have a high of -14 C today according to the forecast. Here is a chart of average temps for Calgary. Have a look at the red line which is a plot of average daily highs. There is nothing average about today’s temperature. ;)

When cold air is blown out of the Arctic to lower latitudes, it gets replaced by warm air circulating north over the Pacific Ocean. A previous polar vortex excursion caused Alaska's Iditarod sled race to be canceled for lack of snow. Considering the whole globe, it is getting warmer.

The MSM new phrase for the west coast storms is atmospheric river. 🙄I lived on the west coast for 90% of my life and never heard this phrase until last year.

My thermostat this morning. 21 C inside and -22 C outside. My aux heat is on, ( propane boiler with a water to air heat exchanger inside the blown air furnace and hydronic tube-in-slab heating in the walk out-level.

Looks like we got a 24 hour reprieve. However, Calgary had its largest snowfall in 40 years and the most snow on a January day, ever. 1.1 ft LOL.

I would have expected a much bigger record than that. This vurtex has to be historic though, right?

Heck, I’ve seen over two feet in 24 hours in western Washington where supposedly it never snows. 🤣🤣

in my 50 years of existence, this winter is the weakest, warmest, with the least amount of snow on the ground in my area. it is almost comical and pathetic. the snowmobile season is partly ruined. snowmobile clubs are struggling. i mean i can go walk in the forest and there is at max a foot of snow. it is a farce. especially considering the record low in my area is -51 celcius in 2012. the lowest i have seen this year is maybe -25 celcius and that is only once. they say february will be colder. we'll see.

The overall warming is *categorically undeniable*.

If people want to fight about what's causing it, they can have it.
