Howdy,
This is an oil forum, for motorcycles, on a oil website. So here is another consideration.
The guys I ride with ride newer touring Harley's. We do a 2 hole ( oil and primary ) at 5k, and a 3 hole (+ transmission) at 10k. So the engine oil is getting changed at 5K miles. We know that is less than the manufacture oil change schedule, we just choose to change more often. We do long rides, and its hot in Arizona. Some pay at dealer and have the tech change the oil and filter and use HD MOCO oil and filter and pay the labor costs....???

Others, we do our own wrenching and use Lucas, Amsoil or Motul. For over 5 years riding together and 10-80K miles no one has had ANY engine failure associated with brand of oil.

Lots of others people on this forum use MANY other brands.

Please focus on just these 4 brands: HD, Lucas, Amsoil and Motul. (Full syn, 20w-50)
1. Do you use these currently or have you?
2. Have you had any issues with any of these brands?
3. Have you done any oil analysis on any of these brands?

I've read many of the other threads about other brands...

Good Day~

1) I have used all of them
2)Everyone except Amsoil
3) Yes

I have a 2018 Tri Glide with the M8 motor. The owners manual says to change the engine at 5K, so 5K is not an early engine oil change. For the record, the manual states 5K or 1 year on the motor oil (which ever come first), 10K on primary fluid and 20K on transmission fluid (no time limit).

All but Motul. AMSOIL looks a lot better than most oils with used oil analysis for stay in grade. Lucas tends to be bad for staying in grade. Ultimately, your engine won’t care either way.

you are correct. oil at 5k is correct.
i meant to say the primary and trans early

M1 in my '01 Twin Cam FLHR since new, only 30k miles on it. Redline in the primary and Redline heavy shockproof in the trans. HD filters.
I like the shifting and less clunk of the Redline in the trans. the best.
I'm an old guy, veteran of the HD dealer days of saying not to use synthetic. oils as it will make your bearings skate, until the Moco came out with their own synthetic oils.

I have a friend who lives in the cool part of Las Vegas, they also spend a lot of time riding in temps over 100 f. They put surprising numbers of miles on their bikes for the heat they have to deal with . A bunch use their Harley dealer to handle oil changes. It really doesn't matter who does the work, because some might not have a place to do their oil changes. HOA rules might say you can't do oil changes on the property. As far as brands of oil goes, unless you use dollar store oil, it's hard to find a bad one. You can change your oil every other day if you want, but all your doing is wasting good oil, and adding a lot to the cost of its maintenance. Changing it out a few hundred / thousand miles before the magic 5k number is probably not going to make any difference in longevity. But running the wrong weight oil, or running it low on oil will. But when your out in noman's land and you happen to need oil now, any oil is better that no oil.,,

It’s not about wear and “not having any engine issues,” any oil you put in your bike will be just fine in the wear department. What differentiates oils is how long it can hold up under those hot conditions and how clean it keeps internals. I’ve used Amsoil and HPL and have uoa’s of them, great oils. Currently switching to maxima pro plus for a few runs. I tend to beat the oil good so I’m experimenting with different brands and viscosities.

I cant wait to see your results. I was running Motul 300v and 7100 but they have gone up to $90-140 per jug. Maxima proplus is $43 per jug at chapmoto on sale even after amazon raised it to $55.

I have switched about half my bike fleet to Maxima and ordered 8 more gallons of it yesterday since its up to $76 on the maxima website now.

To me it runs and shifts just as well as anything else. And since its priced so well I got enough to last me 3-5 years.

Considering doing a UOA on a bike with some historical UOA’s just to see how it looks, but it feels fantastic.

That’s just the ugly truth where we are at with prices now, unfortunately. I still don’t mind spending on good oil for the bike that’s a measly 2 liters, certainly isn’t breaking my bank.

First run to work with the pro plus this morning and the shifting is unbelievably smooth. I thought Amsoil was good, this stuff I almost can’t feel the shift! Going to do a VOA of it in the next few days then a UOA at 1500ish miles. Will of course post those here.

Have you ever tried the extra or just pro plus?

I bought two gallons of the extra 10w-40. My plan for the extra is to run it in the higher stress bikes like my aircooled 50 & 125 and CRF250L which is watercooled but spends most of its life at redline. Both hold small amounts like yours. The aircooled 50 probably gets the most abuse of little kids idling around or riding flat out for hours.

The extra was $63 a jug at chapmoto which is where I order all my oil now. Far cheaper than revzilla and currently cheaper than amazon.

The current prices on Motul may be where we are right now, but I don't have to pay them for quite awhile when I can still get Maxima at yesterday's prices. The maxima proplus is now cheaper than Honda GN4 conventional. It's insane price for the performance.

I switched to proplus in my yamaha SCR950 and kawasaki vulcan 900. Both hold 4 quarts and both shift fantastically. The aircooled SCR950 got 20w-50 and the liquid cooled vulcan got 10w-40. I am mechanically unsympathetic and run everything as hard as itll go. My 19 mile commute is the reverse of traffic and they see a 15 mile stretch of wide open throttle up and down a hilly highway that can easily be ridden around 90-100mph which is all these bikes do. I havent filmed a ride in awhile, but back when I had sportbikes I was insane and would probably be dead if I didnt sell them.

Haha I love your style! I usually ride flat out most of my commute as well. I’ll be watching how the xtra works for you for sure.

Motul is sure overpriced considering maxima extra and 300v seem to be on a level playing field. Hoping the pro plus works out in my machine.
