Another interesting case of arguing with police

I made $44500 per year for about 6-7 years straight without a pay raise. I was required to work 84 hours per 2 week period, which was 24 hours the first week and 60 hours the next week on a rotating every other weekend off schedule.

$44500 yearly salary divided by the hours worked per year (2184) equals $20.37/hour.

Most cops I know have the opportunity to work a lot of overtime... some as much overtime as they want. I'd wager that 50-55 hours per week is average. At time and a half, that's 57,200 - 65,000.

I didn't work ONE single overtime shift or off duty gig, ever. I prefer to have my days off and didn't need the money. Cops that work a lot of off duty overtime NEED the money and consider it a part of their salary. If they didn't work these overtime gigs they would be in real financial trouble. Not to mention there actually wasn't that much overtime available in my area, so the cops that needed it had to fight over it kinda.

Some departments have step plans, or seniority plans. Those that work longer move into higher pay scales than the newer employees. My dept did not have any type of step plan. A 10 year officer makes the same as a 2 year officer. It is a screwed up way to compensate long term employees.

Not in law enforcement anymore. I got stabbed with a needle which caused me to get tested for HIV/STD's for two years. Luckily, I didn't contract anything. Put quite a strain on the marriage. I got into a knock out life or death fight with a perp and blew my knee out. It is functional (barely) and I can still run and sprint, but it's not like it used to be. Doctor says that I will need surgery on the knee soon and will likely need knee surgery every 5-7 years for the rest of my life for touch ups.

Then a coworker was shot and killed in the line of duty. That was very upsetting and deeply affected my wife. We brought a child into the world and we both decided that the line of work was too dangerous. I essentially grew up without a father in the home and vowed that my kids would always have a father in the home, period.

So I quit my fast paced job as a cop and became a stay at home dad for my two small children. Luckily, the wife is an executive at her company and makes a nice 6 figure income so my cop salary is not missed too much.

Yeah I'm aware that Nassau and Suffolk county cops are some of the highest paid in the nation. Lucky them.

I met a retired Nassau county cop under some stressful circumstances and found out the next day that he shot himself not long after I talked to him. I wish I could go back and make a difference in his life, but I guess it's too late now.

Not a chance. Unless your a Mexican cop.

I was a cop in south Florida for 10 years until last year. When I quit I made $20.37/hour. Didn't receive a pay raise in 7 years and actually received a 3% pay cut. I can assure you that a large portion of the cops in the USA make less than $20/hour, probably as high as 50% of American law enforcement makes less than that.

$20/hour is only $41600 per year.

Illinois too. The pension alone and early retirement are where the great payoff is.

Kids and family are always the # 1 priority in life.

Off Topic:
20 years ago I would go for ride alongs (I had to sign a waiver in case I got hurt) with my brother's friend who was a police officer for Florida City, a tiny agency compared to Miami-Dade. Not an easy job, especially when you deal with [censored] on a daily basis. Every month he made all his OT from the many DUI arrests. Very difficult job that leads to quick burn out.

Small correction: work-at-home-dad.
2 small kids is not easy-peasy either...good luck getting over the flu-season.

I remember reading some time ago what New Orleans officers were making. I hope things have gotten better for them there.

That isn't much for risking your neck over...

No, but that isn't how wages are determined. Ask a grunt.

Don't need to...I spent 22 years in the Air Force...
