I have several Fram PH3614's, but the car I was going to use them on is going either to the junkyard, or being donated somewhere. The PH3614 is for all intents and purposes the same size as the PH3387A, which is the specified filter for my GMC van with the 4.3 v-6. The main difference is that the PH3614 has a bypass, and the PH3387A does not. Would it hurt anything to use the PH3614's on my van?

I tried it, and it screws right on.

I don't think it would hurt to use it. One or the other bypass valve (either in the engine or in the filter) will open ... the one with the lowest setting will open first. I think the bypass valve on most GM engines with a built in bypass valve open around 8 PSI. So if the PH3614 has a bypass valve set to 8 PSI or higher, then it should work OK.

Screws right on, no problem.

+1 You risk stripping the threads.

Those do NOT cross, don't do it.

Why don't you exchange them for 3387A's, or the oversize cross for the 3387A, the PH3980?

It might screw right on, but it might blow right off too!
I wouldn't risk it.

I also would not risk it as it is possible that only the very tops of the ridge line of the threads are holding it on. Less of a given metal taking the same stress always increases the risk of failure. Exchanging them or giving them to your local favorite mechanic may be the way to go.

It is not the same as a wrench on a bolt. I used to use 19mm wrenches on 3/4 inch bolts. But there is less to risk there. With a bolt you can tell the play on the wrench. With an oil filter it is a lot harder.

If you live anywhere close to El Monte, let me know as sooner or later I am in a lot of places in So. Cal.

Yep ... don't use it if it has the wrong threads for your vehicle.
