I called mitsu dealer today and wonderful service advisor came online and when asked what oil they use, said Mitsubishi Oil.

Since when did mitsu start making its oil?

Called another dealer, he was straight forward. Said esso bulk oil 35 CAD per oil change. 70 bucks a pop will get me synth oil change (not sure which oil - guessing mobil1)

I then asked them if warranty would be void for my 30k 07 outlander if I did my oilchanges at walmart and the guy said nope.

So called walmart and was quoted 27 bucks for regular pennzoil and 50 for synthetic (pennzoil I believe). Not sure if I need to get the filter..

So, the question is whether I go with dino 5w20 and change it religiously at 3k miles or go with synthetic (say pennzoil platinum) every 5k miles? I am assuming both will come out to the same cost and have same benifits. Am I wrong here?

You can take your own oil to Walmarts and they will change it for a small fee... around $8-$10. Keep your oil/oil filter purxchase receipts, mark down the mileage on the receipts and then keep the Walmart receipt.

Not to sound like a smart @$$, but what does your owner's manual recommend? Most modern vehicles can go 5k on regular oil. I think most 5w20 are blends anyway.

I have a 2005 Ford Duratec 3L. I ran the MC 5W20 blend at 3K OCI until about 17K miles, then switched to PP for 5K OCI. (Oh I did do first change with Castrol 5W20 dino to accelerate break-in.) The MC is ~$2.20 at WM and I'll use any synth (must meet spec/weight) as long as qt based on economics but I do own oil changes. Your economics may be different.

Just check and make sure whatever you use it meets the spec. and weight in owners manual and keep excellent records/receipts for warranty.

Sounds like a plan. Will do. 50 bucks per synthetic oil change is not bad. Pennzoil platinum it will be then. Should I switch at first oil change itself?

My last car.. I did the following:
1. changed factory fill at 1000 miles with regular dino
2. After 3k miles (4k on odo), switched to mobil1 and stuck with it every 3-5k miles.
At 115k miles, engine was like new..

Wal-mart has severl price levels depending on which oil and which filter you want.
A synthetic OC is for any synthetic on their shelves,IIRC.
I grab a better filter than they use and the oil I want(Mobil-1 at the time).
Down side was that their 'book' says my car takes 4.5 quarts of oil; they put in 4.5 quarts of oil.
They charged me for five, though.

I use an oversize filter and it takes the full five.
Didn't catch it 'till I got home. If I go there again, I'll be more watchfull.

If you studyup the UOA 's you will find that the dino oils hold up well for 5,000 miles, why the syn?

Bring the synthetic oil in yourself and watch them put it in and change the filter.

Much cheaper than $50.

Walmart uses Fram filters for their oil change service. I have asked them why they don't use the better and cheaper SuperTech filters and don't get a coherent answer. I have never used them for an oil change but my daughter did a couple of times. Anyway, you may want to take your own filter if you go to Walmart.

But watch out for those receipt demanding door greeters when you leave. They can be dangerous.

They don't use Supertech because in the past, the Supertechs were prone to occasional gasket leaks (or) in some instances, even missing gaskets or the wrong filter number in the box.

I'm sure Walmart has seen too many oil changes come back because of leaks with Supertech filters. I haven't read anything negative abvout Supertech gaskets in over a year. Maybe that issue has finally been resolved.

Why would I go to the trouble to take my own oil & filters to Wal-Mart, and have to watch them so they don't do any substitutions (or just not change the oil)? I change it myself and take the used oil to Auto Zone. Fait accompli.
