I`m a bit curious. I`ve noticed this on several dino oil jugs/quart bottles the last few times I`ve used dino oil (in other`s cars, not mine, which has been on synth).

Upon opening (and *not* having shaken the containers prior),the bottom of the jugs/bottles have been spotless, completely free of darkening and/or deposits. BUT,after a day of being opened, the bottoms start getting the "darkening" within the crevices of the containers, and before long, the entire bottom is slightly "darkened/stained". Could this be a chemical reaction once the oil is mixed with "open air" perhaps, and not additive fallout? Another note, this has never happened with any synth oil containers. My old Mobil 1 container is still completely spotless on the bottom. I don`t want any brand bashing so I won`t name any of the dino brands.

Just a hunch

Interesting theory. I experienced that with one brand only, so I think this is not a simple additive fallout either. I hold that brand in low esteem and only used the oil because it was FAR. I'm curious if we are talking about the same brand.

How old is the oil? I've never noticed this with synthetic either and I don't use conventional for this reason. Haha.

I wish I would`ve taken before and after pics (pics upon immediate opening and pics after they`d been opened for a day).

I've never seen anything like this before? I remember reading something like this previously and since I had 10 empty quarts of PYB, 10 empty qts of Castrol GTX Synblend, 5 empty qts of Chevron Supreme, and 6 empty qts of Pennzoil Platinum I decided to go investigate.

These had been sitting for 3-6 months with caps on, so I cut the bottoms off of 2 of each of them and everything looked like golden motor oil, let them sit like that for a week and the only darkening I noticed was from dust/contaminates in the air. No difference between the Pennzoil Platinum and the Synblends or the PYB. I'll have 6 qts of Pennzoil platinum, 5 qts of PYB, and 5 qts of Kendall GT1 HP w/ Li-Ti saved up by the end of next month and I'll try it again and take some pictures.

I always give my motor/gear oil, ATF etc (regardless of make) a little rock back and forth (not too vigorous of a shake) or rotate them end for end a couple of times before pouring in.

We do it with natural juices, whole milk, paints and all manner of other fluids we use everyday...what makes us think that motor oil must stay in perfect suspension for prolonged periods of storage until we pour it??
